Alternatively, he could also apply for card(s) when the emergency arises, though sometimes it may take a while for the card to arrive

 


Depends on the situation.   If the crisis has been precipitated by job loss, you probably couldn't get the card you need, a case of "you cannot get credit when you most need it"

In my view, one of the most touted and false myths of finance is, "apply for credit only when you need it."  All this does is to ensure you wil *NOT* get the credit when you need it.  This is one of the absolute worst pieces of advice often being espoused not only on here, but credit websites and magazine all over the place.  

 

Simple supply and demand principle at play here.  The more you appear to need something, the more you'll be charged for it.  And, in the credit world, if you need something to the point of desperation, you'll be either held for ransom, or not get it at all.
