I have had my Orchard Bank card for exacly a year now. I also now have a no-annual fee card from HSBC - a gold card. When I opened, I contacted customer service via the Orchard Bank website. They said that they could not drop the annual fee b/c it was the terms of my cardmember agreement. I didn't like their answer, so when I received the card from HSBC, I called them and asked about combining the cards into one card, the HSBC one of course. They put in the request and I am still waiting to hear back from them on the decision, but the HSBC representative (after putting in the request) transferred me to an Orchard Bank representative and proceeded to tell her that I was planning on getting rid of the card. I don't think she told the Orchard rep that I was actually just trying to combine the cards. The Orchard representative, in an effort to keep my account open, then agreed to drop my annual fee and also gave me credit limit increase (w/o pulling my credit). So, the moral of the story: act like you are going to close the account and they just might give in.
P.S. I still haven't heard back about combining the credit lines, but won't it be sweet to have a card over $1000. (Orchard $600, HSBC $500) I might actually be able to rent a car. Couldn't do that with those crappy $300 limits. Especially since they all started authorizing for like $300 over the cost of the rental. Just another thing to make my day happier.
