I have the PNC secured card and love it! The maximum credit line of the secured Visa is $5000.00. I also have the Virtual Wallet as well. So far I haven't had any problems.
PNC's secured card doesn't graduate like BOA's. I had my PNC Visa 6 months and applied for the unsecured PNC Visa. I was declined. When I spoke with a loan officer, I was told I had to have 12 to 18 months with the secured card.
Anyone able to get an unsecured PNC Visa after having the secured Visa?
I just want to thank you all because I needed a secured credit card fast and was not sure where to go. I went to NASA and USAA and was declined at both places. I only had 3 weeks to improve my score so I had to chose wisely. I already have 2 cards with Cap1 but they took 2 months to appear on my credit report! When I came here I noticed someone mention getting their card in 1 week and I knew if I could get it in 1 week, I could make a purchase right away so it will show up on my credit report right away. Well I went in to PNC, applied, and received my card in 1 week (even though the employee told me it takes 3- 4 weeks). Not only that, I pulled my credit 2 weeks later and it was there! Min deposit is $250 max $2000, you get the card in 1 week if approved, and it shows up on your credit report right away. Thank you myFICO!
I have to say that PNC is a really good bank to do business with. The employees are almost always friendly and helpful to deal with.
I have never had a secured card with them, because they don't talk about it much. At one point I did, but the CSr didn't know much about it and thought there was a way to be declined. I think that has since changed, if it ever really was that way. I do now, after rebuilding, have their Signature Visa. It was my first Signature Card and it does have a good limit. I think they give you higher limits based not only on what your score is, but also how much money on average you have in an account with them.
The secured card is an old product for them, so they have a good history of running it properly. I think they started off very conservative with the program and expanded it later. While it still does not get publicized, I think it is a good product. Even with the restrictions it is basically not too conservative, nor is it the other end of the spectrum. If it can't be graduate now to an unsecured card, I think that policy will change. It might take a while to get it unsecured and it might also not get the best of CLIs when it does happen, but knowing PNC it will happen slowly.
While my account is only 4 months old now, I do get the feeling that it will be treated properly. It has become one of my favorite cards and not because it is a Signature Card. (Partially because when I did apply it was instantly approved and upgraded to Signature without me asking or thinking that would happen. I did have a fair amount of money on deposit with them during the past 6 months, which might have something to do with it.)
They really are a good bank and very easy to deal with.
I used to work in the PNC credit card division and can tell you and anyone else out there that this card is for rebuilding ONLY - it will NEVER become an unsecured card, you have to apply for the unsecured card. Let me just tell anyone out there who is in the process of rebuilding, PNC does NOT like to see too many inquiries and they also do not like any accounts opened within the past year. Many people with good scores get denied from PNC for reasons such as too many inquiries, age of most recent account, etc etc. Not even a good friend of mine whose scores were in the 730's got approved. Basically put - if you're using the PNC secured card to rebuild, make sure you get as many baddies removed and make absolute sure your utilization is under 30% Bankruptcy is an automatic disqualifier unless it's older and you speak with an underwriiter for a manual review. The bankers love to sell people on the whole "it'll become unsecured after x number of months of on time payments". I used to have to explain to people over the phone that actually, No...it doesn't become unsecured. You're more than welcome at any time to apply for an unsecured card, but good luck getting approved.
It is true that the secured card is 100% approval - provided that your TU/EX is not frozen and all of the info matches up, and of course you're not listed on OFAC. Bankruptcy, multi collections, repos, judgements, doesn't matter for secured card.
This is not true. You can definitely be declined for this card.
When I inquired as to why I wasn't approved, I was told:
Too many recent inquires
Chapter 13 BK (dismissed 02/12)
Paid Judgement on record.
