Re: PenFed Power Cash Rewards

Thanks for your response. I'm in agreence with you regarding HP happy for membership and any other financial needs. That's why I had to come on here and see what the real deal was with other Penfed members. Well I may pull the trigger tomorrow if I get around to doing it. Will keep everyone updated on my results. Just need to give them my income and boom she said it would be done.

Any ideas what SL I could look forward to? Utilization is 7% and income is 100k+. I've seen a wide array of SL on here from 5k to 25k. But the approvals don't always state their full profile either. Thanks for your reply 👍.

Yeah PenFed membership has been a SP lately and there have been some SP card approvals (as well as HP approvals) but always expect a HP and be happy if you don't get one. No matter what anyone says, there are exceptions to every rule.

@SFLSpotter9210

I agree with @Anonymous . I applied for membership this month with PenFed and that was a SP. It's only when I apped for one of their cards was it a HP. However, I did not have a mailer like you have.

You're welcome.  Yes, please do keep us informed and let us know if the Soft Pull Train continues!  Smiley Very Happy

Starting Limits with any card are hard to guess since there are so many factors that can come into play.  Sometimes, there is something on one profile that someone forgets to mention that can make a big difference.  For example, we recently saw that AOD FCU was extra-sensitive to debt to income ratios on approvals and starting limits.   From what I've seen and read, credit unions in general appreciate relationship and length of membership, so you'll often get better limits after you've been with them for awhile, especially if you're active and using their accounts, applying for other loans, or putting money into CDs or Money Market accounts.

The maximum limit with PenFed per card now is rumored to be $25K (for most people unless they were grandfathered in) and maximum revolving credit exposure $50K.  They normally do not start you at $25K but I believe I saw someone who opened membership, let it age, moved a lot of money into online savings, and then applied for credit who got $25K as a SL.  But that is an exception.

In my case, I had high credit scores, high income, many other high limit cards ($25K-$70K), low debt, and got $15K SL on same day I opened accounts.  I'm also a former active duty veteran, which could have been another approval factor since this is historically a military credit union, but I don't know for sure.  That is actually a pretty good limit for a young relationship with them.

Here are my comparative obserations about Navy vs PenFed.  Navy is kind of an outlier on credit limits, so don't expect Navy-style limits with them, especially as it goes on cards 2 and 3 with Navy.  I see you have high limits with Navy but they are also out of line with your other limits, which is not unusual.  Navy is known to be "less conservative" on My Fico because they are normally more accepting of credit blemishes than PenFed on approvals.  Once you're in the door, Navy is actually very conservative on the first credit limit approval, especially as a new member.   PenFed on the other hand is less accepting of credit blemishes, but if you pass the entrance exam, your first limit may actually be higher than you'd get with Navy. (I've seen other examples, but in my case, on the same day, Navy gave me $10K and PenFed gave me $15K on respective first cards.)  So I'd say PenFed is more consistent with Cls.   A second card with them may be a higher limit but not 3x like Navy will do.     Putting this all together, I'd discard your Navy limits as to how your existing limits may factor into the PenFed SL, and then look at what you have left.  Most of your other limits are in the $3K to $13K range, and this is probably where PenFed will play.

In summary, glancing at your credit age, scores, debt, other credit limits, and income, I'd guess that you could expect a SL with them of $5K to $10K, but it could go to $12K to $15K.

Re: PenFed Power Cash Rewards

Thanks for your lengthy data points with PenFed. Well I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Power Cash Rewards card and was approved for 8750 which is good. I actually started out with saying it was decent but, that's being negative to be honest. I've made some payments this week so far and my utilization will drop down to 5% after those hit so I'll be good.

I also had a very long conversation with the CSR and she explained that even though it's a preapproval they still have to do a HP to verify other accounts and limits and any new accounts that have been open within the last 6 months. Funny part is I've read that their very conservative with new accounts opened like she said. Well I have 3 CC's and 1 CLOC opened within 2 months. So I should be happy they approved me I'm assuming correct?

Well I'm going to be posting my approval over in the other section now. Again thank you for your extensive data points with Penfed. Have a great day and stay safe and healthy.

Thanks for that feedback and congratulations on your approval!  Yes, that's a good SL for the card!

Funny, but that's right about where I placed you ... just about midway between your other $3K and $13K or generally $5K to $15K estimated.  Smiley Tongue   It just confirms that PenFed likes to play more in middle of demonstrated limits.

Enjoy your card and PenFed!  I think you'll be pleased.

I almost applied for membership last month but I got sacred & chicken out, even though I heard about the SP memberships. I was just waiting for my 2 newest accounts to be over year old  & I didn't want the possibility of a HP with Penfed for membership to dash my chances of apping for the Cash+ card in August
