Opened my USAA secured card last August as a start to my rebuild. Shortly after they stopped allowing CLI's and now they don't offer the card at all statying "New secured card coming soon" I'm guessing the new card will allow CLI's again and HOPEFULLY a graduation to being unsecured. What are your predictions? What do you think will happen to those of us with the old secured card?
I wouldn't be surprised if they rolled out something like NFCU's nRewards Secured card. That card can graduate to a cashRewards in as little as 6 months. I could easily see USAA doing that with the USAA Rewards/Preferred Cash Rewards.
In general I'd like to see USAA simplify their lineup. I think most users are redeeming rewards points at 1cpp anyway, so the distinction between rewards points and cash back cards seems confusing and unnecessary. Consolidate similar cards, institute soft pulls for small customer-initiated CLI's, and roll out contactless cards. The icing on the cake would be allowing users to set a preference for PIN over signature at payment terminals. USAA has enough customers (and potential customers) stationed in places where defaulting to PIN could be a huge selling point.
I talked with someone a two weeks ago and they had no information when the card is coming out.
As USAA has had over a year to figure this out and bring a new card to market, it may be they don't consider the secured credit card business to fit into their business model going forward.
What is required is a member path of existing secured AMX card holders to retain their account history to convert to an unsecured no fee card. But I suspect their new secured card that will not help the current AMX card holders graduate out of their insane $35 a year fee.
I think some folks have outgrown USAA. Here it is the eve of January 1st, 2020 and USAA still is not living up to their promise of providing a new secured card by the end of 2019. Yes, their original AMX secured cards were a good source to rebuild credit, but they have never been upgradable to an unsecured card, and for most folks who have had their AMX for the last 10 years are now stuck in paying $35 per card per year forever . . . or at least until their other newer cards mature to 10-15 years older. But for those who cancel the AMX card, they are going to take a massive hit on their credit history as the account will no longer count . . . leaving most people with only a year or two of credit history.
USAA has gone through multiple presidents in recent years, and you can see that the CEO is not listening to members who have said they want a better card. USSA is also not keeping pace with the other card banks in offering cash bonus' to apply for their cards. The last time I was "pre-selected" for their VISA included a whopping bonus of 2500 points (or $25). I chose other banks to apply for their VISAs and have received over $3000 in sign up bonus'.
Member officers os USAA are probably long gone in using other banks for banking and cards. Enlisted members may still be around if they struggled through the 2008 recession and over-spent their budget. But in the end, I suspect they will launch a new secured card, but it may not include a path for existing secured AMX card holders to retain their account history to convert to an unsecured no fee card.
The old tab that used to have the Secured label is completely gone now. I wonder if its pending an update or decided to simply not bother after all.
