Question About Merchant Coding and Capital One

Hi all, have a quick question about CapOne and how merchant coding works. I was just approved for a SavorOne, and the card is set to arrive any day now. DW has a VentureOne that is our daily driver, but once the Savor is up and running that'll take over for groceries and dining. Might be a dumb question, but is the way a merchant is coded on the Venture is the same way it will be coded on the Savor? In other words, are the merchant codes the same across all cards?

I would assume the answer is yes, becuase coding flows upward from the merchant and I doubt my local brewery is categorizing themselves differently for multiple credit card issuers, but wanted to double check.

Thanks!

Re: Question About Merchant Coding and Capital One

Should be.

I've heard of some places being coded different for Amex vs Visa/MC vs Disco. But I think those are the exception rather than the rule, and within the same card type, they should code the same.

Someone will be along shortly to correct me if I'm wrong.

How are there multiple issuers here?  Aren't both of them Capital One?

Anyway, your brewery can code themselves differently for different networks (you might get surprised when using a Discover or Amex, for example) but if your prev card was a Visa/MC and your new one still is, then you are good to go.  Doesn't matter who the issuer is.  Although the issuer is free to exclude merchants by name in the fine print if they so desire.  Not that they'd ever do this for Billy Bob's Brews.

MCCs go by payment network, not card product. I don't remember if SavorOne is a Visa or MC, but either way there shouldn't be any discrepancy. V/MC have a lot of overlap.

Yea sorry, meant different banks. Like with Chase they're nightlife but with Citi they're dining, etc.

Pretty sure this Savor a Mastercard, same as the Venture is.

Oh if they're both MCs, then you absolutely have nothing to worry about!

Re: Question About Merchant Coding and Capital One

Nightlife vs dining aren't actual MCCs... Those are just how theissuer has chosen to "nickname" some of the MCCs.

My frustration with Savor is that a lot of things get nicknamed by Cap1 as "Other - Misc", and then I have to wait and see if they actually identified it as Entertainment or not based on if they gave me 4%.

Holy smokes, I'd never heard of this until just now. At first I read it as Nerd Wallet and was on their site for longer than I'd like to admit before realizing I had read it wrong. This app looks incredible!
