Don't know if this is the right forum or subsection of this site, but if its not then moderators are free to transfer it to right place or even delete it (if required)...Its just that I couldn't figure it out as to where to post this query. Thanks
I have purchased/booked an international airline ticket on MR points thru Amex Travel, but I need to change the itinerary (return date or even departure date as well) or even cancel the whole ticket, but don't know how all this could be achieved or would be processed...how to start or where to do all this? Can I cancel my entire ticket? If so, then what would happen to my MR points? How long it would take those MR points to go back to my account? Am I able to change the itinerary? If so, then would it be free of charge? Please share your experience and knowledge on this.
Also, if I just don't change anything on existing ticket then can I get/purchase travel insurance especially for two coverages-(1) travel accidental insurance, (2) trip interruption coverage because I very much might change my return date which I would know at the end of my trip? If you say that in order to get these coverages or insurance then I need to buy a travel insurance from outside travel insurance company then do you think I could still buy a travel insurance given the fact that ticket was purchased more than 6 weeks ago but departure date is 6 months from now on in October of this year? Also, do you know a good, cheap or reasonable insurance company? Has anyone taken a travel insurance when a ticket is purchased on MR points?
Thanks
As your post is directly related to the use of rewards and protections of a credit card, this is the appropriate subforum.
A lot of the answers to your questions are going to vary based on specific marketing airline (i.e. if you bought an Air France flight with a Delta flight number, the marketing airline is Delta) and possibly fare class.
Thank you so much. I simply bought the ticket thru Amex Travel on MR points for economy class...Its saying Delta but it would be by Virgin Atlantic airline....
Assuming this was a non-refundable ticket (refundable fares are a LOT more), as long as it was an economy ticket and not a basic economy ticket that was issued by Delta for travel on Virgin Atlantic, there are no change fees* or cancellation fees*. (You can verify this by putting in the PNR (confirmation code) and looking at the ticket number; if it begins with 006 it is indeed a Delta-marketed flight.) You can change the dates and flights directly on the Delta website, paying for the fare difference if the new itinerary is more or receiving an eCredit with Delta for the difference if the new itinerary is less. If you cancel, you will receive an eCredit with Delta for the full amount.
*Do note that because Amex Travel is considered an OTA (online travel agency), a reticketing fee of $50 may be applied when rebooking; this has been hit or miss for me when I have needed to change plans after booking through Amex, Chase, or Citi, and I have only been charged that twice.
Thank you so much. Yeah, my ticket number starts out with 006 which is indeed Delta ticket....I tried to change/move the return date for 2 days later but fare difference is now $400 for those days, while this round trip ticket is purchased only for $749. So, I just leave it alone.
