Re: Recommendations for new to US new/thin file?

Update.  Discover: Big fat NO.  Reason:  Too many recent Inquiries.

You'd think Chase, BofA, Discover would be eager to throw him a bone.

I thought Cap1 would *surely* throw at least a $300 card at him with instant approval.

It would be the only card in his wallet (Barclays would love that).

Don't even try Chase/Bofa/Discover cards yet.

Best option is to apply for a BofA and they will probably counter with a Secure card. If BofA has alread said NO, go to a CU nearby who will hopefully give your friend a secured card.

Once they get a secured card, tell them to keep paying down to <10% of Limit before the statement cuts.

After 2-3 months, they can get 1-2 store cards

From that point, they need to sit idle (no more credit etc), until they have received their 12th statement.

After that, they should be able to easily get some mid range cards like Discover, Chase Freedom etc

Citi Hilton Reserve 22.3K | Citi Thank You 8.2K | CSP 15.5K | Chase Freedom 10K | Chase BA 15K | Chase United 8.5K | Chase Marriott 5K | Discover IT 9K | Club Carlson 13K | Amex SPG 20K | BofA Cash Rewards 11K | BofA Cash Rewards 50K

Update:  Cap1 came through with a 1K limit after requesting docs.  Thanks everyone!
