Re: SM EMV

This is what I got back:

Dear x :

Thank you for contacting us here at your Sallie Mae World MasterCard in regards to your card request.

We are happy to inform that your account is now eligible for chip card. The new card will be issued on September 2015. A chip card enables you to enjoy improved security with the EMV Chip Card. The chip card stores the credit card credentials on a microprocessor chip embedded in the payment card which can reduce the chances of your card information being cloned for fraudulent transactions.

While the traditional magnetic stripe requires the card to be swiped, a chip card terminal requires the card to be inserted into the terminal (dip/insert). Once the card has been inserted into the terminal, it will stay there until the transaction is complete. Depending upon the merchant, they will be asked to either sign for the transaction or enter a PIN. Please be informed that your card is capable of both 'Chip and Pin' and 'Chip and Signature'.

Please be reminded that you can make changes to your PIN anytime. Changes can be made through the 'Manage Your PIN' section of the website located in the 'Account settings' tab, or by calling the number on the back of your card and following the automated response menu to change/manage the PIN. The same PIN number is used for both transactions requiring a PIN as well as at ATMs in the U.S. and worldwide.

In regards to your card request, please be advised that we are only able to replace destroyed or damaged cards through the secure message center. If you want to request a card due to the aforementioned reasons, we are happy to inform you that you may do so through the website as long as you have your card in possession and the three-digit security code on the back is readable. To proceed, kindly select the 'Account settings' link and click on 'Request replacement card’. Delivery of cards may take 7-10 business days. Upon receipt of the card, you may activate it by logging into your account online, contacting us by phone to speak with a representative, or using our automated phone system.

We thank you for choosing Sallie Mae World MasterCard and look forward to doing more business with you. If you have any other questions and concerns, please reply to this message.

Sincerely,

Customer Care

I am sensing a rash of destroyed or damaged cards here very shortly...

Re: SM EMV

You guys are too much......lol.  My SM card is in surprisingly good shape for being nearly 10 months old.  Since I don't have any international travel planned for anytime soon, I think I'll just wait until Barclays is ready to replace my card on their own.

Re: SM EMV

Card arrived with a chip.  The interesting thing is the phone system still says the PIN won't be active until used internationally at an attended terminal.  I imagine the PIN can also be activated at a chip reader in the US (such as Wal-Mart) - perhaps the recording was made before US merchants began activating their terminals.

Re: SM EMV

I got mine today. Applied last Wednesday, very surprised how fast it came. Told me that my first transaction needs to be at a chip enabled terminal.

Mine arrived yesterday in the mail, when I activated and created a PIN it told me the same thing in order to activate the PIN change.

I normally don't shop at Walmart but it's the only place in town I know of that has their terminals enabled to accept chip transactions. So I made a purchase there and used it, didn't have to sign or put in the pin. So I don't know if that was really needed.

The wording on barclays site was confusing because it said the first transaction had to be at a chip enabled terminal with an attendant. Maybe it meant the first transaction that would require a PIN needs to be at one of those terminals to enable the chip and pin functionality. I don't know.
