How much of a difference usually?
For example, I know my Discover billing cycle closes on March 6th. Would I expect the balance as of thate date to be reported within a week or so or do they report at end of month etc?

Usually when the new statement cycle generates. However, there can be a lag between what is transmitted to all bureaus from each particular lender versus when the bureaus update their files. Some lenders, like Discover, perform frequent credit bureau updates or mid-cycle reporting regardless of when a statement cycle is generated. Other lenders will not report a monthly zero balance activity if you force "zero balance reporting" (i.e. PIF before stament cycle generates) - it will be reported as a zero balance from last activity on that specific tradeline but will vary by bureau.
