If I hadn't gotten approved for Discover, I might have picked up a Wal-Mart.

Re: Store Cards Dropping Like Dominos

OTOH my Express card is going great.  Got a sportcoat that was usually $250 for $75 by stacking a sale item with an extra 30% off with the card's first use 15% discount.  They send out a free birthday gift with is a free credit of 10-30 bucks from what I've read online and my birthday is soon.

I lost one month of AAoA from 8 to 7 and, of course, another new account showing.  Also on the downside is the 24.90% that you have to pay off every month.  But I'm realizing with this card and all the sales and coupons which are stackable a formerly overpriced store becomes doable.

I plan on getting 0 more store cards.  The idea that a store card might prevent me from getting a real card really sucks, but I'm thinking I've minimized the damage with this one.

Re: Store Cards Dropping Like Dominos

I just got a $500 increase on my target card. Had to call and confirm my income. Hadn't received an increase in 6 years until then.

Heh, $500 was my limit and stayed there. I only picked up the Target Redcard CC in the first place when i was in between runs (truck driver) while i was shopping in Clearwater Beach Florida, encouraged by a check-out lady. It was approved for $300 and a few months later went to $500 and never moved again. I called in several times while having it to try to get something on it but they said no customer initiated CLI's. The 5% off was pretty nice but that's all it offered. It was a starter card for me and that was all.

Re: Store Cards Dropping Like Dominos

My first SCT was VS for a $500 CL.  Was able to bump it to $1050 via luv button.  Lately, I have been shopping there a lot. Last statement received an auto CLI to $2250.

I have Loft at $1,200 and J. Crew at $5,100, which is amusing because that's the card I ust the least.  At the time I got it I thought I'd be doing more shopping at J. Crew but it hasn't turned out that way.  Loft and especially VS offer great incentives that far surpass the rewards I would receive on a bankcard.

I'd ditch the J. Crew but because of the ease of getting CLIs, I'll keep it for a bit longer.  Definitely holding on to Loft and VS.  Awaiting delivery of $140 worth of reward cards from December shopping.Smiley Very Happy I also used about $150 in reward cards during holiday shopping.  Can't beat those numbers!

I agree that some people went a bit too far with nabbing card that they will rarely or never use.  In time, those mistakes will be corrected.  Hopefully, new members will use SCT with caution and only get cards that will serve them well.
