Re: Student with a thin file

There is nothing you can do about income unless you lie (not recommended). So there's sort of a wall you'll hit as a student due to this in terms of approvals, no way around it. But you'll still be able to have a pretty good score, which is more important than getting big approvals right now. Look at which cash back cards fit your spending patterns best and go for the ones you want

Re: Student with a thin file

Wells Fargo (formerly Wachovia) was my first card when I was 18 and they are willing to take a chance with you if you're an account holder. Don't expect much in terms of limit though

I'm very surprised that Cap1 turned you down. The Credit Steps program is usually a sure winner for people with no history. Not sure about student program. Maybe call them and try to reconsider or see if they will get you into a different product?

I'm a student with about three months credit history as well. From what I understand, WF likes to see a previous relationship with them. My first (and so far only) credit card was actually the WF cashback college card. I had a checking account with them since I was in middle school, and was approved with a $1,200 cl. Also, the rewards for the first six months are pretty good with 3% on gas, grocieries, and drugstores. However, if I were you I would hold off on applying for any card until you generate a Fico score (I know, waiting really sucks), since you already have three hps and it could really hurt to have another hp on your account. With that said if you absolutely had to apply for a Visa card right now, I think it'd be in your best interst to apply for a secured card.

I totally agree with this statement.  Wait until you have generated a fico score.  There is no rush and no need to generate wasteful hp at this point.  Give it some more time and you will get there.  I believe it is 6 months and you are half way there.  You have Discover, which is a great card to have.  Use that card responsible and they will treat you well.  Remember this credit game is a marathon not a sprint.

Yup the waiting game sucks but I do know it's the smart thing to do here. Prince, you said you got that high a CL with no file?

Yeah, 12.99% APR as well, but I don't plan to ever carry a balance anyway. I thought I  would get a limit of around 600-700, but I'll gladly take 1,200. In a few months i'll probably call them up and ask for a sp cli.

Re: Student with a thin file

My Discover scorecard FICO score just came in...

719!

However, that might be a bit higher than it should be... http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/Experian-sees-double/m-p/4830913

Why you want a Visa card ASAP? Is that because some places do not take Discover?

I know you don't want another secured card but you already app for BofA, maybe you can request to use the same HP and get a secured card.

If you want to max your score, go with the secured loan/pay 91%/keep for 5 years, explained in a thread under 'understanding FICO score' forum.

Wait 6-7 months, maybe you can unsecured both Discover and BofA at that time. Even ask for CLI. Your score should be mid 700s. You will be able to get other cards with good limits. Good luck.

id recon with BOA and see if they will go for a secured card... perhaps offer you the 99$/500 secured card....... preferabiy using the current pulls they took...

if you want to try this. do it soon since you have less than 30 days to possibly use the old pull....

Like the idea of a second CL aging  roughly in line with the discover.....

and they both do unsecure...

Plus as some have said. not everyplace takes disco, albeit quite a few do..

Re: Student with a thin file

That's strange how it reported double. My score (712) also came in a few days ago as well. Decided to app for the Discover It and was approved with a 1k limit. I think now would be a good time to start thinking about a second card.

Does anybody think Chase Freedom would be a good idea? I do have a decent part time income but I know Chase is a bit harder to get into. Thanks all!

Chase freedom was my second card that I got a few weeks ago with around 720 scores so I think you should be able to get it also.

Did you have a similar income situation i.e., part time?
