Synchrony Weirdness

Soooooo. I recently got approved for a Gap credit card. During the application process online, they tried to send a code to my phone, but they only had an old phone number of mine, so I clicked "I can't use this number." The app went to the 7-10 days message. I then called in because I have a fraud alert and almost always have to do a verification. They again tried the code thing, but I told them about that phone number not working anymore. They then tried to add my new phone number and said they couldn't. They asked me verification questions and then just approved the account.

 

FAST FRWARD TO TDOAY: the card comes in the mail. I go to register it online. The website says I must call them before I can register. I get the lady on the phone and she says the card needs to be activated. I give her the 3 digit code and she says it's activated. She tells me to try again to register, so I do. I then asks me to send a code to that same old phone number. I tell her and she tries to add and send a code to my current phone. She can't and says I have to wait for a letter in the mail before I can register online. BUT.... she says I can use the card right now. So I can run up a balance, but I can't register online to pay them?

 

Part of me wonders if this has anything to do with me freezing some of the lesser known credit bureaus (Sagestream, Innovis, etc.). But I also have some other accounts with Synchrony (some open and some closed/paid) that have the correct phone number. Has anyone else had this issue?

Not sure but in todays world of fraud, not having up to date phone info and mix that with Fraud alerts, bound to be issues. In the end its for your protection and theirs but im sure it can be a headache too.

Frustratingly, I had the same issue with my Amazon card. They pulled my old cell number from somewhere (not TU because I checked) and the Google Voice number I use for everything (which was on the application) and have for years doesn’t show up on the website because it’s VoIP so I have a letter coming in the mail as well. 

 

I can log in on the mobile site (it shows my Google Voice) but I set up push payment from my bank while I wait for this stupid letter. 

 

And when I went for my PayPal account, I made sure to give them my actual cell phone number so I was able to log right in. 

 

Its really scary that Sync is pulling numbers and adding them as security for your account without prompting you about it.

It all has to with third-party synchrony is using sagestream I think is the name they only have your old info

Yeah, they kept saying the information was coming from "public records" on both calls. I am going to dispute that old number off of every report I can think of today. I think the major ones are LexisNexis, Sagestream, Innovis, ARS, and CoreLogic. I'm not really sure why they couldn't use my current number because it is listed in all those places. LOL.

To make matters more confusing, I have had other Synchrony accounts in the past (Paypal, Chevron, Gap, JCP, others) that may have used my old number. So they could be using that information, but the reps both said that having other accounts with them did not matter in terms of what number they choose.

Yeah Synchrony seems to wall each card behind its own interface. When I got approved for the PayPal card on Saturday I went and tried to login to the Amazon and it still had just the old number but the PayPal, happily, doesn’t have that number.
