Tap and Pay Cards

Hi all,

I had a question about the RFID cards, I'm thinking about looking into them.

I was going to get the Paywave for my BofA Cash Rewards, and the Discover card with the built in Zip sticker for my Discover.  A lot of places I frequent use these, and if I check my accounts every day, chances are any fraud I find shouldn't be an issue, right?

Re: Tap and Pay Cards

I wouldn't worry about fraud with these things.  But I think there is a reason the technology hasn't caught on.  It's just not that complicated to swipe a credit card.  My SPG card has this, and I have used it a couple times just to see what the fuss was about.  After trying it out, I usually swipe my card, I just don't get it.  The only real use I have for the feature is that my toddler likes it when I let him pay for things, and it is easier for him to use than to swipe the card.

Re: Tap and Pay Cards

Correct, any fraud shouldn't be an issue but there is a higher chance of fraud IMO and its a hassle to have to call in to get the charges removed/cards reissued, etc. I find it takes the same amount of time for me to swipe vs scan my card anyways and I usually swipe without thinking much about it, since that's the gesture I'm used to I guess. I actually called to get my RFID cards reissued without the chip.

Checking accounts everyday sounds like a much bigger hassle than swiping your card every purchase.

Re: Tap and Pay Cards

There are wallets with shields that prevent anyone from reading the RFID chip.

Re: Tap and Pay Cards

Fraud is pretty unlikely.  You can set up alerts that will text you the moment your card is used when it isn't present.

Or, you can always get one of those metal credit card holders.  If it were me, I'd rather risk fraud than get caught carrying one of those contraptions.

Re: Tap and Pay Cards

Thanks for the input everyone!  Looks like I'll just stick with my basic plastic "swipe" cards.

As of now I'm balancing BofA 1-2-3 Cash Rewards and Discover More (1, 2, 3 percent, and 5 percent on categories, $$$).  Amex and Chase are sitting in the sock drawer, with Citi as my backup.

If you find it in time (of course the creditor will fix it for you but it could be a real PITA). If you do get these type cards I would recommend getting one of those aluminum wallets. Can't be picked up by people walking by with devices.
