If I were to ask for one with a hp, what would be a good amount to ask for? Double? I would like for the card to at least sit at 5k.

I would simply start reporting a balance on this card, pif after statement cut and repeat. Then try for SP CLI every 3 months... it has finally worked for me but it took 15 months to get Discover to approve my SP CLI from 2,5K to 5K .. but if you are not in "need" or rush then I would patiently keep trying. For me the 5K is fine on this card but I will start playing with the luv button from November 14 again and see how far I will get.. lol

If you're not looking to app for new credit, why are you playing the utilization game with discover by PIF before the statement cuts?

+1  .. I think this is contra productive for CLIs with Discover - (of course I have no proof of this statement)

Re: Testing Discover.....what do you think?

I had to take HPs with Discover every time I wanted a CLI. If you want or need it, you'll just have to take the HP. I had my Discover card at 1500 CL. Requested  a CLI. HPd and only moved to 2000. Took a HP a few months ago and moved to 5000 as my Discover card was the only card I had behind the ranks with my other cards. Discover likes to see usage and balances.

As of 2017, rebuilding...

Should I try this for a few months to see if it makes a difference?

You can certainly try but CLI's are never based solely on usage.  If you really want the CLI then you may want to reconsider insisting on SP.  I had to HP for my recent CLI.

Impossible for us to say.  It depends on your credit, income and their critieria -- same as any creditor.  I requested a bit more than double and they countered with $500 less than what I requested (still more than double though).

I don't understand.  If I want a CLI bad enough an HP isn't a big deal IMO.  SP's are certainly nice but it all comes down to which is the bigger priority for you?  If avoiding the HP is a bigger concern then you'll just have to keep waiting and hope that they will offer a CLI based on SP for you.

Re: Testing Discover.....what do you think?

@takeshi74 Sorry I can't paste, I'm on my cell. I don't want anymore hp's so right now, that's my priority. I opened alot of credit cards two years ago and I'm waiting for all of those hp's to fall off later this year. Its really just a challenge for me at this point because I have plenty of credit and I'm just hanging in the garden for now. I'm just trying to see if changing things up will trigger a sp cli. I'm just bored in the garden....lol

I've allowed them 2 HP's and a little bit of interest, gonna see if that results in anything in 3-6 months.

Given I believe (in general) CLIs have no actual value, my rule would be: NEVER pay interest just to get one.

Re: Testing Discover.....what do you think?

Let me just chime in and give one contrasting example with Discover and balances.

This is my 13th month running with Discover (had the first statement in May 2013).

I had kept balances running all along till May 2014 statement, but that last one reported a zero balance. The only CLI I had got before that was a HP (750 --> 2000) and could not get any SP CLI after that. Within a week of the zero-bal reporting, I got a CLI from 2k --> 5.7k. My spending from the date of opening has been around $4.5k.

My score according to last Discover statement was 677. AMEX reported another zero-bal (so did Discover itself) so the score may have gone up a few points, I'd guess in the 680s.

Maybe Discover does not always give CLIs for balance carrying. Who knows!

Re: Testing Discover.....what do you think?

I find it a little strange with discover. My wife had a 4000k limit when she open the account and we would always PIF each month for about 8 months and we say no increase in the limit. Later on arount the 11 month we carry a balance for about 1000k and suddenly we got a $2000 increase. Based on what I have read on here its hard to predict how and when they will give an CLI. Just my 2 cent.

Re: Testing Discover.....what do you think?

I've gotten two CLIs from discover since I opened the card in April 2014 ($5500 ➡️ $6500 ➡️ $8500). Both CLIs were with SPs.

Re: Testing Discover.....what do you think?

Last Discover (non-auto) CLI was this Jan, from 16,900 to 18,900 - no HP.

I've never seen a HP from Discover for a CLI request, but they've always been the slowest with auto-CLIs, and the lowest CLs in general.
