I'm thankfully NOT a collector of cards! (I really hate apping ) I have 4 cards, a total of 82K available credit (yes I got a few raises!). I knew it was time for me after I switched out the CapOne card. I think that if you're saavy you do sometimes switch things around. Tweaking things when it makes sense is just sensible. I won't tweak for maybe another year or 2. These days something REALLY good has to come up to make me sit up and take notice at the moment.
My next steps is to lower some APR's, though many are pretty low to begin with (hey its worth trying right?)
+ 1 Sometimes I think that I have one too many cards.

I just don't care as much anymore. Adding another card for 0.5% more on something is just a waste to me with my spend and lifestyle. I prefer spending on mostly one or two cards. Much easier to track what I am actually spending. The amount I'm giving up in rewards is neglible for my spend.
If something really wonderful comes along and has a nice sign on bonus I'd be open to it but for everyday use I'm done. Depending on your spend there are only so many cards you can really get use out of at one time. I'm not into having cards laying around for totally niche/specific circumstances that occur once a year or something.
Good question galahad. Let me think...
For us, it was once we completed the list of cards we wanted that fit our lifestyle. We may step out of the garden to finance home improvement projects or for an awesome cash back card.
