Trying to get Chase Ritz Carlton as an Amex Bonvoy holder

can I get approved for the no-AF chase Bonvoy card despite having the Amex cards? I know i won't get the SUB but 1) my plan is to upgrade it to a ritz-Carlton in a year, and 2) I could use the 15 additional nights to get to Titanium elite.

Am I wrong in this strategy? Thanks!

Re: Trying to get Chase Ritz Carlton as an Amex Bonvoy holder

It looks like those Bonvoy cards in your profile are more than two years old so you actually would be eligible for the SUB. You can get cards from both issuers. The only thing is if you're under 5/24 and in a position for Chase to approve you? If the answer to both those questions is yes, then your strategy is fine with a few caveats.

As an AmEx Brilliant/Business holder you're already getting the maximum 40 nights a year from holding those cards. Won't get any more from opening any other Marriott cards. And there's always the possibility that they nerf the Ritz card before you can PC but that probably isn't worth worrying about.

@CaptJOB is correct, @mkhan1093.   You can only get elite nights from one personal and one business card.  In your case, the (25) nights from AMEX Brilliant and (15) additional from AMEX Business limits you to 40 elite nights from credit cards.

The RITZ is still a good card.  Marriott raised the "free night" award from 50K to 85K Bonvoy points when they revamped the AMEX Brilliant. Rumors are that the AF will also increase from $450 to $650 on the RITZ like it did with the Brilliant.

I also agree with the SUB eligibility based on your Bonvoy Brilliant (03/2017) and Bonvoy Business (03/2018).  Chase limits the SUBs for only 24 months.  *The Marriott Bonvoy AMEX (as opposed to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant) credit card referenced in paragraph 2; point number 1 is the card issued prior to the refresh in 2018 after the Starwood-Marriott merger.

60,000 Bonus Points After You Spend $2,000 On Purchases In The First 3 Months From Account Opening: This credit card is not available to you if (1) you currently have any of the following cards or (2) you received a new cardmember bonus for any of the following cards within the last 24 months: Marriott Bonvoy® Premier credit card, Marriott Rewards® Premier credit card, Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® credit card, Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus credit card, Marriott Bonvoy Bold® credit card.

The new cardmember bonus is not available to you if (1) you currently have or had any of the following cards within the last 30 days: Marriott Bonvoy® American Express® Card, The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express; or if (2) you applied and were approved for any of the following cards within the last 90 days or (3) received a new cardmember bonus or upgrade bonus for any of the following cards within the last 24 months: Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card, Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express, Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card, Starwood Preferred Guest® American Express Luxury Card, Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card.

My question would be, though, that if you're a Marriott Loyalist and wanting the free night from the Ritz, why not go for the $95 AF Bonvoy Boundless instead of the no-AF Bonvoy Bold?  The SUB is richer (100K points for $3K spend versus 60K points for $2K spend) and the 35K point free annual night more than reimburses the $95 AF.  Either card can be converted to the Ritz after one year, if desired.

Based on clause (1) in both these rules, it looks I can neither get the card nor the bonus because I currently have the Amex cards no?

Ignore that clause and just read the one I left behind. The AmEx cards you currently hold are fine.

Wrong.  You have to look at the names very carefully and remember that some of these cards are not even available to new applicants.  Several of these are the OLD cards Marriott or Starwood had PRIOR to the 2018 merger

(1) you currently have any of the following cards    OR

(2) you received a new cardmember bonus for any of the following cards within the last 24 months:

  • Marriott Bonvoy® Premier credit card,
  • Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus credit card,
  • Marriott Rewards® Premier credit card,
  • Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® credit card,
  • Marriott Bonvoy Bold® credit card.

You do not show the first three cards in your signature.  Do you have them?  These were CHASE cards issued prior to the 2018 merger between Marriott and Starwood.  You do not have the last two cards in your signature either.  These are the CURRENT CHASE cards that you are planning to apply for to convert to the Ritz.  The BOLD is the current no-AF Chase Bonvoy card.  The BOUNDLESS is the $95 AF Chase Bonvoy card.  Either can be converted to the Ritz.

The new cardmember bonus is not available to you if

(1) you currently have or had any of the following cards within the last 30 days:

  • Marriott Bonvoy® American Express® Card,
  • The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express; ... OR IF

The Marriott Bonvoy American Express card is **NOT** the Marriott Bonvoy BRILLIANT American Express card.  AMEX had a Bonvoy card prior to the "BRILLIANT" version.  Likewise, AMEX also had a Starwood Preferred Guest card.  Again, this was all PRIOR to the merger in 2018.   For cardholders who still hold either of these cards, they aren't eligible for the SUB.

(2) you applied and were approved for any of the following cards within the last 90 days or

You did not apply for any new cards in the past 90 days.

(3) received a new cardmember bonus or upgrade bonus for any of the following cards within the last 24 months:

  • Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card,
  • Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express,
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card,
  • Starwood Preferred Guest® American Express Luxury Card,
  • Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card.

You haven't received any new cardholder bonuses for Marriott cards in the past 24 months from either AMEX or Chase.

The "old" AMEX Marriott Bonvoy card received automatic Silver status; the Bonvoy Brilliant (until recent refresh) received automatic Gold status; the new refreshed Bonvoy Brilliant earns automatic Platinum status.   Likewise, the earning structure was different:  Old AMEX Bonvoy earned 5x Bonvoy points at Marriott and 2x on other purchases versus 6x Marriott; 3x Dining/airfare; 2x other purchases on the Brilliant.
