UPDATE- Trying to Discover

I recently decided to finally go gardening. However, my experience with CapitalOne and bucketing has also been coming to a head. To my understanding QS1 is considered a starter but generally QuickSilver is not. Either way, I've seen little to zero growth at all with these guys. There's also the recent drawback with the account combination debacle- their customer service is lacking. Really, I just want to absorb the QS1 into its better half, eliminating the AF right along with it.

I'd like to get my foot in the door with Discover. I know they hand out better SL's and are more inclined to grow your account with CLI's. Not to mention, I'd say they're a bit more reputable than Cap1. Plus the intro to match cash back during the first year is on point and I've heard their customer service is legit. Also, the free FICO scores is a nice perk.

If I'm going to garden for the next two years, I have my doubts with CapitalOne growing at all and essentially wasting my time. Would you guys recommend staying the course here. Or, would it be beneficial to take Discover into the garden with me, assuming I would even get approved. AND what scores do I even need to get on board with them? Maybe mine aren't even high enough at this point? I'm under the impression they generally pull from EX and occasionally EQ secondary.

What are your thoughts?

Re: Trying to Discover

My scores were lower and i had a discover card until it was charged off and i already want it back so i say go for it. Check the pre approval page and that will tell you for sure but can’t remember who they pulled.

Re: Trying to Discover

@unknowncarrier

I checked the pre-qual and it only suggested the secured IT card, but I have no need or desire for a secured card. That being said, I know the pre-qual is just a pre-screening and doesn't mean you won't be approved otherwise. What were your scores when you app'd, what SL did you come out with and which card?
Thanks

My score was a 644 and they pulled my TransUnion report and I applied for the student chrome it card got a 500$ SL. I also had a capital one card quicksilver and they gave me a $300 limit so discover still gave me more even though it was a student card.

Re: Trying to Discover

You can try for the regular card but if you don't get approved then the secured card is still a great option.
You only need to put a minimum of $200 down and it can unsecure in as little as 7 months with many people getting an increase to their limit of $2000 or more.
The best thing is that it functions likes Discover giving you cashback and you also get the cashback bonus match at the end of the year.
It's honestly a good way to get your foot in the door with Discover.

If your prequal resulted in secured card only, I'd wait to apply till non secured cards show up.

Your scores are okay as far as Disco goes, so there must be something else that's causing lack of CC offers.

Are any of your cards relatively new?  Any recent derogs?

Re: Trying to Discover

Discovers prequals have become pretty solid in this day and age.... Also.. you could sign up for Discovers Credit Scorecard to put you on their radar, get a free FICO score possibly an additional CRA or pull, (CS is SP of course)  and they will likely target you when they are interested in giving you an unsecured card.......

Id periodically also try the prequal again in a little bit as well.....

Re: Trying to Discover

@Remedios
As far as derogs go, I have a collection and two lates that are two years old. Inquiries are low- my CFU is 3 months old.

I do currently have a dispute with each agency on the collection. I will get the results of that within a few weeks.

Re: Trying to Discover

Not trying to trample on @Remedios but those open disputes (Some banks will not give you a card with open disputes)  and if you do have thinnish credit, that recent open of the CFU could be a factor too... Moreso the open disputes but there have been some reports of folks with opening a card too soon after another one even with discover but they usually have fewer cards than you do... ending up with a denial.... (which might be why your getting the secured offers).... just sit and wait a little bit... thinking 3 months max... but keep checking periodically or wait for discover to offer you an unsecured card via Credit Scorecard

@joltdude
Thanks, I definitely want to get on their radar. In fact, I must have already caught their attention, because I've been getting the mail offers which put me in question mode.
