US Bank CC Experience

Hi, I'm new aronud here,

I opened a US Bank checking/savings account thinking I'd apply for the Cash+ card. When I was in the branch, they apparently signed me up for a perks+ account and I never got a choice. I found out after I opened the savings acconut and the teller said ok let's check on your credit card application. I was like, "huh, I didn't know you already put the app in, I wanted a specific card". Teller kind of ignored me and said I was approved with a 10000 limit. I had to "reapply" for the cash+ card since "they don't do product changes" per the branch. I reapplied and got approved for the Cash+ with a 9000 limit.

When I got both of these cards in the mail, they were both platinum level cards, in fact, the cash+ turned out to be the 1% visa cash rewards card. I called up and nobody would budge. Underwriting could not give a reason for the downgrade, although one of my calls I got an underwriter that said "Sometimes the computer likes to send a platinum card out to those eligible for the cash+"

After numerous calls with supervisors always being unavailable, I ended up closing my checking and savings account and told them to close all my credit cards. Not only for the ridiculously bad experience applying for the credit card, but also because they charged me for my checks after they said the account was free and the checks were free.

They ended up closing my checking/savings/and the cash rewards with an 8000 limit. However my 10,000 limit card is still open.

Two questions. One, anyone here think it's possible to PC my perks+ card down the line or should I call and get that closed too? Two, do you think I can get that first inquiry off my credit report if I called up?

Re: US Bank CC Experience

Also, scores are 792 from EX and 790 from TU. No idea about EQ.

I have 8 years of credit history with no missed payments. Highest credit card limit is 15,000. I had zero new credit cards in the last 2 years and had 1 inquiry for a mortgage a few months back.

Hello and welcome!

First, some people have had success PC'ing it with enough persistence. Bother them on Facebook, call them frequently, etc.

Second, did they just put your information in an app without your consent? I am a bit confused at to what happened with the Perks card.

Re: US Bank CC Experience

I went in to open a checking/savings account with the intent of also getting the Cash+. When I sat down, I was offered the gold package which is fee free with a credit card. I choose that one. Then she got my info for the checking account and I signed the electronic screen with all the disclosures. Same thing for the savings, read the electronic screen and signed. After that she said she was going to check the app of the credit card. She apparently app'ed taking the information I gave for the checking account. I was waiting for her to give me a choice for credit cards because that's what wells fargo did when I opened an account there years back.

Re: US Bank CC Experience

I understand now. Thanks for the explanation!

I never disputed an inquiry before, so I don't know if it is even possible to get it removed. But I read the U.S. Bank website, and it said you had the option of 30 or so of their credit cards. So I would definitely fight this. Good luck! Smiley Happy

Re: US Bank CC Experience

As far as getting the Cash + card, I know it is one of the toughest to get from US Bank.  That being said, your scores and profile seem more than adequate to qualify.  From my own personal experience and all I have read on this board, US Bank likes to put people through lots of hoops for their top products.  It's just part of their corporate/business practice.  I don't blame you for being ticked as it seems they  jerked you around.  But I would think of it like this...what's the point of having great credit if you can't tell the US Bank or anyone else to take a hike if they're playing games?

The Cash+ has great benefits, and I'm planning to app for it in a year or two.  But if I don't get it, so be it.  I'll consider other credit products with similar benefits where I don't have to go through similar hassles..

Re: US Bank CC Experience

Essentially that's what I did. I told them to take a hike when I closed my accounts. Not sure if anyone's had luck PC'ing a Perks+ to a Cash+. I already took a scissors to it so I don't care if theres a phantom 10,000 credit line showing on my report. But if it's futile to PC, I may as well close the thing now.

Re: US Bank CC Experience

Wow, that sounds like a horrible experience. If it were me I wouldn't activate the card and I would try to get the inquiries and closed accounts removed from my CR since it sounds like you were misled about what you would be getting. If you do decide to give them another shot in the future I'd try another branch. I took my mother in to get a cash+ card recently and it was a very easy, pleasant experience.

Re: US Bank CC Experience

I had a US Bank cash rewards card (before cash +) was introduced. I treid to upgrade the card at the branch but could not the representative at the branch did everything possible to do so. So applied an got the Cash + card a short time later (a couple of months or so) US Bank upgraded the card to Cash +. as a part of a review of my account.  I do not know why you did not qualify but US Bank web site it clearly states that they will do this. Re: US Bank CC Experience

I know they CAN downgrade me, but after numerous calls to underwriting, no one could tell me why I was not eligible. As I stated before, one of the underwriters said a computer spits out a platinum card even to those who qualify for the Cash+. If they gave a reason, I'd play their 6 month game and try again, but with zero reason I felt like it was bait & switch as I was lured to get the checking/savings there over Chase solely because the Cash+ works better for me than Freedom/CSP
