Many institutions have a restriction that requires the paying account be in your name.

As with all things I am sure there are exceptions, and some that never check.

Example screen-shot from FNBO with the notice at bottom of page.

Yes, no sure what OP did, but adding a payment account that is not yours (and thus have no real right to give authorization to the credit card company to take funds) will indeed be red flag.   But this is for "pulls".    As others have said, there should be no problem "pushing" money into the account from any other account.  Including mailing in a check

Yes we have "no info as to how the payment was initiated".

Most people pay cards from the credit card side, pulling from an external account.

So yes I am jumping to a conclusion, not in evidence as they say.

Another institutions pull notice.

Very strange....I use my friends' and my family members' accounts all the time to pay my credit card for various personal reasons and have been doing for years, but never ever got any warning or any kinda adverse action. Matter of fact, I just did it early morning today....I believe anyone can make a payment to anyone's account. There must be something more into your profile/account, and if not then all I could say is- unfortunate situation which goes to say- wrong place and at wrong time....

For example, I have always done transactions of cash totally $10k-$50k...and even cash out in casinos all over US...but no problem...but one time I was in a casino in Yonker, NY...wherein I had $1200 in cash but those were bills of $20s...and since I didn't want to carry that many bills in my pocket, I thought to get big bills of $100s...So I went to cashier cage and asked them to give me the big bills, but they impounded my money and took me to security room with 4 security guards around me...wherein their supervisor told me that unless I prove to them wherein those money came from, they would not give me money back and after 5 years they would send it to State. Thanks God that I withdrew those money from my bank's account thru ATM...But I threw the receipt of it...Thus, I had to wait a month for my bank statement to come...and when I got my bank statement, I took it to that place and when Security Supervisor reviewed it and only then he released that money...It scared the hell out of me. Because if I didnt have that proof then I might not have ever seen my money....

I have made cash transactions of big-big money all the time...If a transcation is of $10k or more then they would just take my social and copy of my ID to report to IRS, but never impounded the money, but just for $1200 they impounded. I understand that its all about money laundering suspicion...but it all boils down to- wrong place at wrong time...which seems to be the case in your situation. Sometimes things happen all of sudden which makes no sense, and then this proverb applies- wrong place at wrong time...Good luck...

Sounds like you just haven't had the right bank question it unless you all had the same last name because many of them have the policy that the account must be in your name. I actually recently went through this with PenFed where they couldn't verify the name on the account was mine and refused to add it as a payment method. It ended up being that it was because I already had another payment account manually added on there and they only allow one but most banks are verifying the name on the account when you set up an ACH these days to protect themselves from fraud.

It could also be that you're high net worth and they aren't as concerned about losing money based on how you're talking about large sums of cash dealing like that. For us regular people, they want to minimize losses.

Re: US Bank close my account

I have used our business checking to pay my Citi AA Exec card many times, large amounts too, as high $30k.  Also, Amex and chase personal cards, but I do have business cards with them.

But I would never use someone else's checking account, just a bad decision by the OP.

OP should have used Venmo.
