USB Cash+ and Shoppers Cards

I just found this during some research.  I thought it may be helpful to others.

"IMPORTANT CHANGE: Effective April 14, 2025, grocery store and supermarket purchases at discount stores/supercenters such as Target and Walmart and wholesale clubs will only earn 1% cash back. Gas station and electric vehicle charging station purchases at discount stores/supercenters, wholesale clubs and grocery stores/supermarkets will only earn 1% cash back."

There was more in the disclosure, but I thought this was important.

Re: USB Cash+ and Shoppers Cards

That makes no sense at all for the Shopper card, because it gives 6% back at 2 retailers that you pick from a list, and Walmart and Target are on the list.

So the only explanation is that they would have to remove those from the list. The list is already lacking in choices, so losing those 2 would make it extra sucky.

As for the gas station purchases, neither of the cards are great for gas purchases anyway.

No other cards I've ever used have restricted cashback on gas purchases because the gas stations were owned by a wholesale club.

Those specific gas stations are always coded as "gas stations" and not "wholesale clubs", so I'm not sure why they'd restrict it anyway.

That seems quite odd.

(Currently I use a Citi Custom Cash card to get 5% back on gas at BJs.)

Re: USB Cash+ and Shoppers Cards

I've never tried it, but does Walmart trigger the 2% grocery category on the Cash+?  I'm talking about the supercenters, not the neighorhood market locations.  They do with many MC/V cards unless explicitly excluded.

If so, this disclaimer would make sense (although still disappointing).

Re: USB Cash+ and Shoppers Cards

I forgot to mention I'm my original post that I was looking at these cards but don't presently have them.  With this new revelation I likely won't get them. I was looking for a cash back card that would get 3-5% at Walmart since that currently is our main store and also the same for Sam's Club and gas at a standalone Sam's gas station which in fact does code as gas.

I think your missing the main feature of these two cards not being effected by this change.  There are already better CC's for this lesser feature which will even be further reduced.  Not a deal breaker for me.
