USBank Platinum - DECLINED...guess why?

I was so happy that I used my tax return to pay off all of my credit card debt that I thought I would celebrate by applying for the USBank Platinum Visa. Well, I was declined online so I called and spoke to an underwriter. She was very pleasant and told me that I was declined because there are no USBank locations in my area. I live just south of PIttsburgh, PA. She said that unless you have an existing relationship with USBank, they will not approve you for a card if there is not a branch near you. WOW....wasn't expecting that!

open a checking/savings online.  Call back.  You now have a relationship with them and don't need to be near a branch.  Revel in your success and creativity.

US Bank should make that point clear on the application so the consumer doesn't waste an inquiry.

OP, if you have a credit report monitoring service for all three bureaus, I would wait to see if they did a hard. If so, call and ask if they would please remove it, since you weren't eligible in the first place.

I think I remember someone else going through this, and there wasn't an inq, because they weren't eligible in the first place.

eta: should have said "recode as a soft", not "remove." My brain was thinking it, but my fingers weren't typing it. Thanks, txjohn! Smiley Very Happy

Back in the  70's and 80's this practice was quite common.  I had a MC account for several years that was issued by local bank, never had a problem with it.  Then I moved cross country and they promptly cancelled it as I had moved out of their area.  And that was in the Carter era where there was a freeze on issuing any new credit to try to reign in inflation.  It was not easy to get lined up with new credit.  Don't think this is as serious, but we are tinkering with a system that has worked well for most people.  Let's not goof it up.

We didn't have online accounts back in the 70's and 80's.  I never figured on having accounts in distant cities, but I do.  They pay better.

Gotta go with the technology sometimes, Watchmann...even though that very technology creates new problems to deal with that were never expected.

Re: USBank Platinum - DECLINED...guess why?

Friendly FYI:  subscribers (ccc's and lenders) cannot remove inquiries, they can recode to be soft.

An inquiry is not reported by the subscriber, like an account.  The CRA's report the inquiries as mandated by FCRA for no less than 2 years.  However, this mandate is to report it to the consumer, not others....so there is no legal reason it cannot be recoded as soft...but the chances of delete, especially on EX, is remote.  TU will lose them at times....and EQ has at times actually deleted, but EX stands firm.

The "reason" you should state to USBank is that they should have used your application and SOFT inquiry to determine eligibility, prior to any actual application or hard inquiry.  Therefore, they should be willing to recode as soft for "promotional / pre-approval / positive id" purposes.
