United Explorer and Mileage Plus

So I received two offers today:

50k points after 2k spend and $0 intro annual fee for the United Explorer

$0 introductory annual fee for the Mileage Plus Cub. It's usually $395

Which is a better offer? Help please Smiley Happy

Do you fly united paid? Sounds like a stupid question, but what good is lounge membership if you never use it? Are you easily going to meet the 2k spend? I'd take the miles offer unless you have a couple paid united flights coming up where the lounge access will come in handy.

2k spend is not a problem. I'll meet that easily.

Well, I do not have to fly United to use the lounge. And I have travel plans in December and January.

You may not have to fly united to use the lounge, but it could be in a different terminal etc. Honestly I think 50k miles are much more useful than going into a lounge 2 to 3 times if that. If you have several flights coming up then the calculation could change, especially if there are long connection times. However, for most people I think the value is in the 50k miles. You can buy lounge passes fairly cheaply if necessary.

Re: United Explorer and Mileage Plus

50K points are worth more than $399.

I suggest you to take this one and upgrade to club on 2nd year.

Very true. I'll probably go for the 50k.

They definitely are. I didn't think about that. I could also do that.

Re: United Explorer and Mileage Plus

No annual fee at all? Waived forever on the explorer?

Or only waived for the 1st year?

25 years old. Scores around 740. Income = 45K. Chase Car Loan @ 2.4%, AAOA = 2 years. Total Personal CL = 120k.

Re: United Explorer and Mileage Plus

You will get two free lounge passes with the explorer as well. I'd definitely take the 50k and run with the explorer, unless you really value lounge access and would spend a ton to leverage the 1.5 miles per dollar on the mileage plus card.
