I have a capital one offer for 5% back at Walmart online and it shows in the FAQ for the capital one offers that you don't have to use a capital one card for payment and can still get the 5% back. My Amex Blue Cash Everyday gets 3% back with online retail but payment has to be made directly with the merchant. If I click on the capital one offer and make the purchase in the Capital One browser, will it still give me 3% back on the Amex card or will Amex read it as not being directly with the merchant and give me only 1% instead? If it will give 3% would it still do so if the item is a pre order that doesn't come out for another 6 weeks or so?

Most interesting. I did not know this. I do not have an answer to your direct question, but thank you for making me aware that the Capital One Shopping is essentially a portal and not necessarily tied to using a Capital One card.
Here is a link I found that discusses this some. reddit.com - capital_one_offer_triggered_without_using_capital

Only one way to find out.
If you do it, please report back. Inquiring minds want to know.

Ditto.
I've always just assumed I had to pay with my Cap One card.
I have used non-Capital One cards through the Capital One Offers page several times. Each one provided the proper Offer credit in roughly 6 weeks. I find it to be my most reliable shopping portal.
@rgd51 Be careful with the fine print on the Walmart Offer. It excludes many popular categories like groceries, personal care, and household essentials.

What I was planning on purchasing is some 4K movies that are available for pre order and that category wasn't listed in the exclusions. Do you think Amex will classify it as online retail so I can get the 3% back? Since pre orders don't get charged until after the item is released in ships, does that impact being able to get the rewards?

I can't specifically answer your questions about Amex BCE or pre-orders. However, my purchases through the Capital One Offers links all posted to my credit card accounts looking just like they would have if I had simply gone directly to the store's website. For example: A purchase via a REI.com Offer posted as a transaction from REI.com and not from some entity associated with Capital One.

The portal just directs you to the Walmart site, so I don't see any reason why the purchase would code any differently than if you went to the online retail site directly. So my bet is no problem here.

Much harder to say on this one. I'd say you're probably okay, but who knows.
