So today I get a call from US Bank saying someone attempted to use my card in California for 2000.00 at Best Buy. A month ago Barclays said someone tried to use my account in Florida at a hotel.
How is my card numbers being obtained.....This is freaking me out.
There are many methods. Some you can help to mitigate. Some you cannot. This is why you must actively monitor all open credit accounts. Don't freak out about it. You're covered as long as you contact your creditors within the time limits.
Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately I had my Venture and my Chase Hyatt cards both compromised within two weeks of each other. It's nothing I did, as the Chase compromise was something that originated within Chase. That card was never even out of the house, was less than a month old, and it happened. My Venture card had also not been used for several months.
These things happen and it's frustrating and takes time to sort it out and get it fixed when it happens multiple times. I understand how you feel after this happens over and over again - you just feel violated.
The people who do this are very good at it and could have lifted your card numbers from anywhere - a place you shopped, or in the case of Chase, something (or someone) internal to Chase had to do with the issue.
Review your accounts regularly so you can keep on top of it. I've found this to be a good strategy.
It's going to be ok ![]()
I agree. Monitoring your accounts is key. Others who have had this happen will respong to your question, too. In the meantime, you can do things like make sure your computer is virus free. I also bought a wallet that blocks electronic copying of card information. I check my accounts each day or every other day. Just a worthwhile habit in my opinion.
Good luck to you!
