I was told my secured card should graduate after a year of proper handling of the card, so I just called a little before my anniversary date and said I was following up and checking on how it was looking for my status changing to unsecured. The CSR checked into it and was able to confirm that yes, I was graduating to unsecured and would get my new card and deposit back soon.

I don't think calling them shortly prior to your anticipated 'graduation date' to follow up on your status will adversely affect you or your chances of graduating to unsecured status - I think the things that matter are what you mentioned - your handling of their card and your overall profile.

Hopefully someone else who's gone through this process did and can answer that for you.
But the easiest thing might be to just call and talk to one of their CSR's, if it's getting close to the date you're hoping to go unsecured - they probably can answer your questions, too.
