I've had more accounts closed for inactivity than me closing them but here is my list
In recent memory, I've only closed:
January 2020 I closed my Uber Visa, due to reward redemption changes. Account was opened in March 2018.
April 2018 I closed my Capital One QS 1.5%, due to opening Citi Doublecash. Account was opened in October 2008.
December 2017 I closed my Novation Credit Union Visa card. Lackluster rewards and didn't use account. Account was opened in June 2007.
Those are the 3 recent closings. Other credit card closings were all 10+ years ago and have long fell off credit reports.
Closed:
- Ebates Visa. No matter how much gardening and spend I put through it the Stuart Little $1500 CL refused to grow, no matter what number I called. Gave it a little over a year and then decided I didn't need that kind of negativity in my life. As peculiar as Synch has been lately, I don't see myself picking up anything from them anytime soon.
Considering Closing:
- Cap One Savor. As much as I've been working, I haven't used the entertainment category as much as I had planned. I've been keeping restaurant spend mostly on CSP and Amex Gold so it's seen little use as of recently. Cap One isn't an easy card to grow without making them your daily driver, so we may be at a stalemate. It IS my only MC with a useable limit, which may be its saving grace, but Citi has been bombing my mailbox with offers for almost every card they have. If they were to open the door...
- Cap One Union Plus MC. One of my oldest cards, so it's just kinda hung around the sock drawer with a coffee or a 7-Eleven run thrown on it every 6 months. Cap One themselves informed me that they will never give CLI's on this product due to the contract writing with Union Plus, so I don't even bother trying with it any more.
- Paypal Credit. Once a nice hidden tradeline, it's now come into the limelight on all bureaus. Synch did give it a modest SP CLI which is nice, but I honestly don't see myself using it again as I could pay off anything bought under the limit within 2 months no matter how I paid for it. I've left it open for UTL padding (not that I need it), but if Synch closes it for lack of use, I won't be heartbroken.

@AverageJoesCredit wrote:Closed my Fingrrhut once i got better cards. Closed all my Comenity store cards since i didnt really need the uti padding plus once the Ex dumped me like yesterdays ..... what was i going to use a high apr Jewelery store card for? Lol
My biggest regerts though was closing my Penfed Promise and Chase Amazon too early
ive been blacklisted from them ever since
What would qualify as too early for Chase? I plan to close my Chase FU once the 3% Cashback ends in 3mths for me and try to move the CL to my Chase Amazon instead.
I'm also planning on closing my Paypal 2% Cashback card as well. Already have the Citi DC and Penfed PCR with 2% so no real need for the Paypal card.
I'm in the process of closing at least 2 (maybe 3) of my cards by the end of the year. Ever since I got the Discover IT, I felt that I don't need three 1.5% cards. Also, I want to lower my card count to 4 once I can get approved for the Amex Hilton Honors. So here's what I'm closing soon:
Quicksilver One- low limit card that doesn't grow and I don't have to worry about the AF. That will close by April
Chase Slate- One of my older cards that I'm keeping around to eventually transfer the CL to my Freedom Unlimited.
Shell Card- 10 cents off a gallon is nice but I can probably benefit more from a cashback car .
Barclays AA - SUB
CO Venture - didn't use it
Discover - didn't use it
Citi Prestige - nerfered perks
Chase FU - didn't use it
Amex EDP - didn't use it/ gold changes
Amex Marriott / SPG conversion - switch to hilton
Macys Amex - didn't use it
Sticking w/ MR program and some URs
$500 Uber Visa wouldn't grow without a HP.
$1100 QS merged it into my Savor.
Not sure if it counts as "closing", but I never activated a NFL Points credit card many years ago (maybe 2008ish). I must not have read the rules clearly, but I was expecting a MasterCard, and got a Visa. I already had a Visa at the time and only app'd to get a MasterCard (and the team design). I ended up never activating it.
When I think back on it now, I'm kind of glad I never used it because I don't know what I would have used the points for. I really only wanted the design.
