What Credit Cards to apply for, for someone just starting

Im 18 and i am trying to start building my credit. I was trying to get a Credit Card. I was woundering what would be a company that would accept me. I am 18 and going into the Air Force i leave next month to Basic Training. I tried Capital One but got denied. I am stunned becuase My brother got accepted and he has no job or anything. He just recently got a second card from them also. He just started working and only works for 10 hrs a week at minimum wage. He was the one who advised me on starting my credit now. Becuase in January i plan to buy my car and want to have some credit History by then.

That's odd you got a decline from Capital One. What reason did they give?

After you've finished Basic with AF, go into your base's BX (Base Exchange) or AAFES and ask for a "credit card" with them. It DOES report and you're pretty much ensured an approval. And your limit will be approximately a month's pay.

BUT, if you default or miss a payment, your First Shirt WILL know about it and will discipline you. It's a HUGE biggie to defraud AAFES. You can even be dishonorably discharged for it (my Ex was ... among other reasons). Most likely, though, would be a LoR in your jacket.

Personally, AFAIR, the whole AAFES card thing was instituted because servicemembers (enlisted) make durn nigh minimum wage and usually have poor credit. It was (at least back then, it was touted as such) meant to be a nice way of helping our "boys" obtain and build good credit. Unky Sam likes you to have good credit and be responsible financial stewards.

Call the backdoor number with CapOne and ask why... It can't hurt, then ask them to reconsider... Anything is better than a flat out NO.... They already pull your CR's, so the hard pull is on there might as well get all you can out of that!

This hardly surprises me! I had a similar problem after I finished CR and waiting. I recommend you talk with your bank or credit union and see if you can get at least a secured card. If you app with Chase, Amex and Discover, you're just wasting your time.
