The original question....You don't pay a bill as often.

And your spending ability varies with your statements.

YES, Amex sets spending limits on a 6 month average!

I learned the hard way long ago... unless they have changed policies again.

Re: What happens if I don't use charge card a lot?

Just giving my own experience here:

I have an amex gold card, and to be honest I hardly us it. Like...at all. I think in the past 6 months I've put a total of maybe $400 through it. Yet, when I do a "Will my charge be approved", I put 18,000 and it says Yes, it will be approved.

So - I don't believe it's simply based on past months averaged - I think there may be a little more to it?

25 years old. Scores around 740. Income = 45K. Chase Car Loan @ 2.4%, AAOA = 2 years. Total Personal CL = 120k.

my experience is that if they reduce it which I am not sure of, unless you are looking at using the card alot, it probably won't impact your normal use if you resume using it.

Haven't used my AMEX Zync card since march and before that it wasn't really touched in a year or so, yet my check spend ability button, approves a 15k general purchase..

High balance ever reported was only $1000.

Re: What happens if I don't use charge card a lot?

You don't need to close it. You're just getting started. For example, use your ED card for piddly stuff like groceries,  Starbucks, Chipotle and the like.

Use your green card to pay your cell phone bill, cable, insurance, etc. Then pay the money back right away.

For example I used our PRG card last month for property taxes, my 2 storage bills, our health insurance, and weekly motel expenses as we travel for a block of weeks at a time and pay a weekly rate at motels in 2 towns.I used Discover to pay our cell phone bill and Quicksilver to pay Conns furniture bill.I bought $600 in merchandise for our business on the PRG.

Just experiment for a few months. You can make it work.

If you want to carry a balance from time to time of course use the ED.

I didn't have an issue with my amex charge card, but my frickin ink bold charge card got the limit reduced drastically within a month due to low use. I was livid that I was getting declines and I had to call them up and demand the original line be reinstated which they did. One of the reasons I dislike charge cards.

I wouldnt close it. Just try using it a little more. If they decrease your limit, use it even more then call them and say that you want your original limit back as you plan to use the card for larger purchases.

Is that one of the backdated AMEX's with an old date on it?

If it is, those things are considered gold now for the wonders it does for your credit profile.  The annual fee may be $50 but it could save you thousands in interest money if it greatly boosts your credit age
