When they do a F/R (for example if they did one on me), do they also want to check your spouse/domestic partner's taxes if they were included in your HHI? My DW makes about the same as me. I did not add her as an AU b/c she has an Alaska Airlines card and gets all those good Alaska Airlines miles from BOA (I would have one, but I had a C/O on my Alaska Airlines card a few years back). So the income they see on my returns would be about half of what I said my HHI is. Any thoughts?
I have to disagree Cheddar. You want them to ask for your returns! If you claimed HHI, then your taxes should be married filing jointly. Thus, it wouldn't matter what they ask for, the only thing you can provide is a joint tax return. Sure, they can ask for individual W-2s and that's when you bring up the argument of what qualifies as HHI, but if they ask for the return they can't make you have an individual return that you NEVER filed since you filed MARRIED.
cheddar wrote:No, they only check the primary cardholder's returns. That's one of the big complaints people have with the F/R process: they ask for HHI on the application but when they F/R you, they only want to see one set of returns, and you don't get a chance to explain to them how you arrived at the HHI figure you put on the app.
Who would do that unless they're actually separated? There are endless huge tax disadvantages to filing separately.

The IRS really seems to hate "married filing separate", so much so that it honestly baffles me.
