Re: What is churning?

I do not think it is a good practice to take about churning in this forum.  "Churning" is not a good thing.

I know the thread you're talking about, but I'm not sure to which post you're referring. I see some bonus chasing activity there, but not churning.

My understanding of churning is that the churner must get the exact same card multiple times to get multiple bonuses. If you're not repeating bonuses, you're just a bonus chaser.

All churners are bonus chasers, but not all bonus chasers are churners.

No churning is good.  Paying interest on credit card debt is not a good thing.

There is no prohibition against talking about churning on these forums and whether it is a good or bad thing has to be left to individual users and how it affects their credit profile.

While technically true, I don't think it's much of a real-world distinction, especially as issuers impose restrictions on collecting the bonus more than once.

To me, the basic concept is "getting a card for the bonus, rather than for any intent to make use of it for its rewards/perks structure", and whether this is the same card or not it has the same pros and cons.

In terms of impact on the CR, there is (hardly) any difference, as they cannot tell whether you got exactly the same card as before or if you got another one from the same issuer.    The issuer will know, but that's up to them!

Re: What is churning?

Thanks wasCB14, appreciate your view and opinion. I think my understanding of churning was more on the lines of what longtimelurker quoting of basic concept in post above my current reply. If im wrong i stand corrected and everyone must do whats best for them.

If you open a card for the bonus then close it by years end and rinse and repeat, and to me its some kind of discernable pattern just by looking at said persons profile, it looks like that persons is churning the card only for its bonus and not other benefits the card may bring. Like i said, im still learning and of course i may be wrong in my observations but thats how i see it.

Re: What is churning?

Churning is the process of shaking up cream (or whole milk) to make butter.
