What is the best CC to open when looking to build credit

My current Equifax score is 618, I'm unsure of the others. I have zero credit cards and would like to get one to build credit. I did have one a few years ago that I let become delinquent because I was young and dumb and didn't realize the value of credit. It was sent to a collection agency the amount was $700. I settled it by paying $422. What would be a good credit card to apply for to start building my credit?

My vote would be Cap One for rebuilding. Be prepared for pulls on the big 3 CRAs if you apply. Might be best to try the pre-approval first then apply if you get any pre-approval offers. If you get denied for some reason, then it may be best to go with a secured card for awhile. Cap One also has a good secured card. Good luck!

Re: What is the best CC to open when looking to build credit

If the collection is still showing and you have no revolving credit cards, it is probably best to apply for a secured card. Every one has a different opinion on this and different opinions on which card secured or unsecured.

If you belong to a Credit Union (CU), you should probably start there and see if they have anything they can offer you. Just bring in a current CR when speaking to one of the Rep's at CU.

Decent rebuilder cards:

Credit Union

Orchard

Cap One

HSBC

Public Savings Bank

Wells Fargo

US Bank

BoA

Citi

To just name a few..

Good Luck

Re: What is the best CC to open when looking to build credit

I just did the prequalification for Orchard bank and it says I am prequalified for an Orchard Bank Mastercard. If I submit it to actually apply can I still be denied? I do not want to hurt my credit. This is the details. It doesn't say if it is securred or not but it does not require a down payment but it does require a $39 processing fee. Any advice?

Re: What is the best CC to open when looking to build credit

It is not a secured card.    You could be denied but I don't think it is likely.   I would go ahead and apply.   It is not going to hurt your credit, if you are denied.

Re: What is the best CC to open when looking to build credit

+1 to the not secured card.

From what I have read about Orchard when apply for unsecured card and pre-qualify being denied is usually very slim, but can happen. Also from what I have read if denied unsecured card they usually just offer you the secured card which would not require another hard pull if accepted.

I say try the Orchard card. Also, you could probably get the Cap1 card too. Ideally you want about 3 cards with one reporting <9% Util.
