I'm wondering if I should get a gas card from Chevron, Shell, Texaco, Union 76, or one of the other big oil companies?
Currently I don't have any of these cards and use either my AMEX BCE for gas (3% cash back) or my Discover IT card (5% cash back in certain quarters). I apped for the Ducks Unlimited card (5% cash back) but was denied for too many inquiries.
Are the cash back cards are the best bet for gas purchases? Or are the benefits of some oil company cards attractive enough to warrant getting them?
For example, I see Shell is offering a SUB on its Fuel Rewards MC that pays $0.30 off per gallon for the first 5 tanks by the end of June. After that, the discount is $0.10 per gallon on every fill. Shell's MC is issued by Citibank. Chevron's Techron Advantage VISA card pays $0.20 off each gallon at Chevron and Texaco stations for the first 90 days, after which the discount falls to between $0.03 and $0.20 per gallon, depending on your non-gas spending. Chevron's cards are issued by Synchrony Bank, about which I've read mixed reviews... What do you think?
Sam's Mastercard gives you 5% off gas purchased anywhere. No quarters/No Caps/No AF. Cash back payable once a year. You do have to have a Sam's Membership which does make it kind of an AF
Costco Visa
Convenient (for me), inexpensive gas (vs. competition local to me), pumps are kept in good condition, and 4% back.
It has several other uses.

I tend to view gas cards like my airline and hotel cards, which provide very limited benefits.
I vacillate between Costco Visa and the Chase Freedom. Union 76 is closest station to my home, and currently, they offer $0.10/gallon discount if you pay through their mobile app, which is good through the end of June. You can use ChasePay in your 76 mobile wallet. For the last few months, I've been getting 5UR/$ for using ChasePay (and now for gas stations in this quarter) plus the $0.10/gallon discount.
Otherwise, outside of that station, I pretty much use Costco Visa, and it's great internationally. I used this for gas when I was in Belize last month and got 4% cash back, which was cool, since gas is really expensive there.

I'm getting the Costco VISA next month, PC from my AAdvantage MC. I'll probably use it a lot; good to know it works overseas as well!
I noted that Exxon Mobil has a current promotion that pays a whopping $0.50 per gallon discount (for the next two months) if you pay via their smartphone app (called Speedpass+). You have to sign up for their credit card (Exxon Mobil Smart Card) via the Speedpass+ app. But you can pay with any credit card you want via the app. That's a pretty attractive bonus, even if only for a couple of months. And I assume if you use a cashback card to pay via the app, you also get the cashback bonus in addition to the discount. Sweet!
A bit off topic but since a lot of people use shell cards or app , if you have an AAA membership you can get 5 cents off per gallon if you have a fuel rewards account, and if you sign up for a new fuel rewards account you get 25 cents off gallon. I have been doing that + using my ink cash to buy shell GC at 5x. Just something to look into if you are solely using shell as your primary gas station

Thanks!! I wasn’t aware of the extra .05 for being an AAA member I will have to do that. Shell has the only decent gas where I live & premium is expensive (392 Charger).
im using my propel card, its 4.5% at travel redemption with my wf visa siggy
