I was considering ShopDiscover for an extra 5% cash back or Fidelity AMEX mall for an extra 2% but they both have fine print that iPhones do not qualify for the mall bonus. I ended up using the Fidelity AMEX for the standard 2% back.
I just got an email today for my citi Aa exec card which is a world elite MC. Apparently they have upped purchase protection in case of theft or damage (90 days for those in NY and 120 days for everyone else for up to 10k per incident. They are adding a number of other benefits as well.Doesnt cover lost cards though

Alternatively if have crappy Wells Fargo card to pay for your cell phone bill you get cell insurance on it kind of.

The CC's protection seems like it will cover it within 90 days of purchase- "purchase protection", dont really think thats going to be the same as insurance. I dont have Amex maybe they have 2 yr extended warranties i dont know.
I have two friends that cheaped out buying applecare when they got their phones, and both have had issues since and had to pay out of pocket to cover it. 1 dropped her phone off the dresser and spidered her screen, she got a $350 Est to fix it, and the other dropped hers in a cup of coffee, and put her phone in a bag full of flour to try and dry it out. Still waiting to hear about that one.
If an iphone is say 650$ for the 16GB version right? 99$ for applecare is only 15% of the purchase price, which is about as much as people will pay for a case and no one really gives two shakes about doing that, to each their own, but purchase protection is not going to give you coverage as if it were insurance.

Really no words for that. Also, who is paying $99 for a cell phone case?
Must handle I phones like they are new born babies,because any little drop phones will shatter. I personally don't think apple care is worth it unless you really throw around your phone haphazardly.that's my personal opinion though

Applecare is terrible as far as cost/benefit, there are plenty of better options out there.
Applecare does not cover theft or loss for instance. I pay (iphone 5s) $70 for 1yr of coverage w a $50 deductible. Unlimited claims and covers anything, I've used it before so I know it works.
Applecare "service fee" (deductible) is $79, max of 2 per yr and does NOT cover everything.
