Merchants would add up and hand in or mail their Visa / MC & Amex bills...... but received so few Diners Club transactions that they often did not process them for several months... often as much as six months later...... talk about "float"
Ahhhh but those days are long gone....
So are two slices of pizza & a soda for $1. and Gas @ under $1 a gallon. ( ok OK, I'll stop now I sound like my Father )
Ha! Even when I had a Diners Club (a "real one," for work), a lot of the places I would use it still used the knuckle-busters to make carbons. As much as I want to tell you to get off my lawn (and bring me back some 10¢ hamburgers and penny candy) that was actually only at the turn of the century (the current one, obviously).
When I was a kid I did always look forward to one day having an Amex and a Carte Blanche. Never got the latter, but I went above and beyond with the former. 😂

For what it's worth, I also had a OG Diner's Club (issued by Citi) in the late 90s... and I can't blame mine on my employer, it was a personal card.
It was an interesting experience, and I got it mostly for the lolz but it did have some neat perks. One that I really liked was the ability to pay in 60 days instead of 30 without penalty.
Every time I see folks post about the ICBC UnionPay card (or the recently defunct JCB Marukai card) I think back on my experience with Diner's Club, LOL.

Sigh. I had semi-planned late 2019 on making a long day trip via Acela (because LaGuardia is the suck) between Boston and NYC in late spring 2020 which included a stop at the ICBC branch in Chinatown. COVID took care of that idea. :-/

One of my biggest mistakes was to cancel my Arrival+ during the pandemic, as part of my consolidation. On hindsight I should have kept that one.
What was the appeal?
2014.
Diners Club "don't blink or you'll miss the app window"
Seven years now. Still a legend.
Every time I saw a Diners Club card on the window stickers of a restaurant back in the 80's, I always pictured someone like the Dos Equis guy (world's most interesting man?) from the ads and millions of memes. Hilarious in hindsight.

My experience 'back in the day' was even when those window stickers were displayed, the staff might not be aware the restaurant took the card since they had never seen one.
One time I had to refer a server to the sticker at the front door of the restaurant... he actually went to check for himself, LOL. (He did finally just swipe the card, and it worked.)
That's why discussions on using UnionPay and JCB cards remind me of the old Diner's Club, since they can be similarly janky to use.
@UncleB that's hilarious! Not to mention believable. Fact is, all those years I only saw a Diners Club used once. One of our buddies had one. You woulda thought he had a Mark McGwire rookie card in his wallet he was so proud of that thing. 😆

Amex began extending the timeline on their Welcome Offers at the start of the pandemic (including to recent applicants at the time). It's not universal, though. I just got a BBP a couple of months back and that was the standard 3 month time frame for spending. And of course they extended the times right after I rearranged spend to hit a $20k Welcome Offer on Business Platinum! I don't think manufactured spending had anything at all to do with it (they have introduced many other policies in recent years to help combat that), but rather it was due to uncertainly and perceptions regarding the economy, and initially rolled out as a relief measure for those that may have needed to drastically cut back spending.
Applications for new Diners Club MasterCard products ceased quite a while ago. Existing cards are still being serviced. True Diners Club charge cards have not existed in the US in quite a number of years. As a brand, Diners Club still exists here and international cards are still accepted using the Discover network.
Thanks for the information. Amex's increased time frames for their SUBs makes sense in light of the pandemic. I wonder if they will discontinue that when the pandemic ends. (I know some people think it will never end, but that's not true. All pandemics end.) I read an article about Diner's Club that referred to it as a dinosaur, the "charge card that time forgot." I worked in retail, restaurants, a fancy hotel, and banking and I have never seen one.

On the other hand, the past two years have seen a few new rewards cards including, but DEFINITELY not limited to, the AOD CU 3% Visa, the US Bank Altitude Go, and the Citi Custom Cash.
Thank you!
