As I understand it, CapitalOne travel / points cards allow you to redeem points for specific charges at $0.01 / point - same as with a statement credit. What is the advantage of, or why do cardholders redeem for specific charges instead of a general statement credit?
other card eco-systems allow redeeming for speific charges too. This makes sense IF you get enhanced points redemption value, like with Altitude Reserve, but if there is no enhanced points, redemption value, I'm not quite sure why one would do this? What am I missing?

It's probably just a gimmick to help people account for or justify a purchase. See something in store you want, you get it, then you click the Cover Purchases button and it tracks it for you, makes you feel like it was ok to get. People may like that kind of feature.

just because it's an option doesn't make it a good option, if Cap1 thinks an option will entice more spend or reduce redemption costs from transferring out to partners, I'm sure they will try it
Cap1's cashback side has always been extremely quick/flexibile with earnings and redemptions, it's just part of their business model/ethos
Don't ever use your points to pay for items. Even at 1cpp, you're still losing a little by not using a CB card and earning CB for that new purchase. One exception might be using your points for discounted gift cards.
