Re: are comenity and synchrony the same?

Not the same, and I don't have any Comenity cards. Because of that, up until recently, I couldn't tell you which was better. But lately Comenity seems to be doing some strange things from what I've read on here, making me glad I don't have to worry about that.

Re: are comenity and synchrony the same?

Synch has slightly higher standards in approving cards.

Sometimes it seems like Comenity will hand out cards like candy through the SCT for people with any kind of credit with a soft pull, but they've also shut down accounts out of the blue.

Since we're generally speaking talking about store cards, the value is more in whether you normally shop at the store the card is for or not.  It's silly to get store cards for places you wouldn't normally shop at.  I do carry a Comenity card (well, it lives in my sock drawer) but I do buy stuff from there every now and then.  Yeah, I could use one of my major cards at that store but carrying the card gives me a crapload of coupons and one time $100 worth of merchandise cost me less than $4 so I'll use their card for that alone.

Never, ever, ever carry a balance on one of those cards though.  Mine has a 26% interest rate.  No thanks.
