Charge cards aren't for everyone. However they do using have nice benefits. Having recently used Amex protection, I have to say it is clearly superior to other cards programs including chase. Platinum cards for example have a myriad of travel related benefits that can easily outweigh costs if used such as $200 airline credit, priority pass, etc. Before chase ultimate rewards, membership rewards was clearly the best and one of the few generic point programs in which you could transfer points into mileage programs with multiple airlines/hotels. Mr points could only primarily be gotten via Amex charge cards. For you, it would be your in with Amex as lending standards are a bit less strict than most of their credit cards and you are borderline for credit cards. Charge cards util isn't factored into FICO util calculations which is great. For some, the pif requirement of charge cards fits their spending pattern. Also, npsl limit on charge card can grow much quicker than any credit card. I got npsl to at least 80k a month within 2-3 months of getting it when the starting npsl limit was probably under 5-6k initially
