bread amex card used for first time at the gas station pump .... checked transaction history listed as a 200 dollar pending (68.00 actual amount)
curious why transaction was treated like a debit card?
ideas?
The same thing happens when i buy gas. The first time it happened with my bread amex i called customer service and they said not to worry most gas stations put a hold for a higher amount but when the transaction processes at bread it reduces to the actual amount charged, it did process at the correct amount. ever since when i buy gas this happens, mostly at BP stations but i understand different stations have different hold amounts.

The hold that is put on credit cards when used at gas pumps was recently raised as gas prices went crazy. The hold is an amount that was authorized at the gas pump, which in this case would've allowed you to pump "up to" $200 in a single card swipe. Once the credit card company receives the finalized transaction from the gas station, the authorization will fall off and show a purchase for the actual amount. This is typical for credit cards to make certain there is enough available credit to handle the full authroized amount.

Different networks (and card types -- Debit vs Credit) have higher threshold authorizations when used at a variety of gas stations. AmEx cards tend to be slightly higher. Plus, some of those authorization thresholds have increased proportionally over time given current gas prices and fraud at the gas pump.
This has been happening since gas jumped above $3/gallon.
My daily drivers usually hit me for a $250 pre-authorization when I pay at the pump.
This is happening because, for many people, filling up the gas tank is a $100-200 proposition...more if you drive a diesel and live in, say, CA or HI where the average price for a gallon is $6+/gallon. In the past, far too many people were able to sneak in that $1 pre-auth and dump huge $$$ on unsuspecting CCCs who had to wait for the transaction to batch. Imagine someone does that for multiple vehicles. The CCC could easily be out a grand in some instances.
It sucks, but until gas comes back down, it's a burden we sometimes have to bear.
The current national average is $3.579gl. It is $3.199gl in my area.
The average fuel tank size is 13 to 16 gallons.

Yes but not everyone has an average fuel tank or average gas prices. (i.e. me. In my area, $3.60 average price, 24 gallon tank). ![]()
Anyway the hold is no big deal. It's very around as long as I can remember. The hold will fall off and only your actual fuel purchase amount will post.
