My P2, who is very mathematically sophisticated and also adept at corporate finance has never been interested in the credit card game but recently wanted to look over stuff. Looking at her Cash+ rewards statement:
"OK, I see we got 1% on Nstar, $5 on $500, but WHY does it show $0 with a $20 bonus??"
"Umm, that relates to the previous item" (actually the only item that quarter)
"So why doesn't it show $500 there?"
"Because their IT is useless"
I think that's the only answer!

Yes, I agree that it's confusing. In my experience, the credit amount ($20.00) in the "bonus" line is the total amount of extra rewards (beyond the base 1%) that was earned in that particular category of expenses over the entire statement period. Why the line item description says $0.00 is a mystery to me as well.

I just redeemed rewards from both of my USB cards tonight and looking at the recent transactions list is like trying to decipher greek to me. It makes sense if you don't think about it too hard I guess. If you try to make sense of it, it will only give you a headache. Their system could be better no doubt about it. Trying to figure out what restaurants actually code correctly can be challenging. A lot of places I go have resaurants inside of other establishments but sometimes they code as resaurants and sometimes they are "grouped" with the main establishment and I don't get my 4% cashback...so for those places I need to use a different card but the way they break out rewards and bonus rewards makes it a difficult task sometimes...I wonder if they like it that way?
