@FalconSteve wrote:There's nothing wrong with maximizing rewards (and free FTF with as many cards as possible), I'd hardly call it being a rewardaholic (that implies harm, as long as the rewards aren't an excuse to spend more). Also, I would NEVER CLD a card (unless they were moving that limit to another card). I would want a larger limit just to increase my FICO/padding
But remember that is what an addict says about almost every addiction! In this case, yes, no actual direct harm, but certainly it can take time that perhaps could be used more fruitfully in other ways (e.g. more time with friends and family and less time on myfico and managing 25 credit cards).
And, as discussed in this thread, there is a limit to when padding becomes a justification for CLIs rather than an actual productive need.
Well, maybe I'm not truly addicted to rewards or acquiring more cards/higher limits, but I am more active in maximizing rewards than I used to be. Not to the point of being obsessed, but hey, cash back is cash back, right? No worse than compulsive coupon clippers, or those who spend hours shopping online looking for a better deal on that gadget. For me, it's little more work than just choosing a card for a transaction.
My 5 cards and 50K TCL is my version of some members' 20+ cards and 6-7 figure TCLs. Just a few years ago my TCL was 5% to 10% what it is now, and I only had 2 cards for many years. This forum affected me... I used to be CLI averse, now not as much, but my credit conservative side still comes out. 50K is more than I'll ever need though, and even if I lost half of it, or even 75% of it, I wouldn't really be losing anything I need. My monthly card spend is small compared to many here and I always PIF and usually aim for AZEO (or AZE2/3) most of the time.
I think to myself that if each of my cards had a 5k limit I'd be perfectly fine. Most are more than that, one is less. I have quite a spread actually... lowest is $1,500 and highest is $23,500. Covers all the bases.
