Hacks should be expected. Plan accordingly.
Set-up all important accounts for 2 factor identification. Also, best not to allow merchants or even Amazon/Ebay to store CC info in their databases. Recommend freezing (or locking) credit reports as well. Also set-up to get text notifications for all purchases where physical card is not present and above X dollars even if card is supposedly present. I set X at $250.
Use different, unique, passwords for all your key accounts. Of course, it is hard to remember 50 or even 20 complex passwords so, I keep mine in a password protected Excel file.
Experian just changed the free account to offering daily credit score updates and the top banner on their page says
"A data breach just exposed 2.9B private records - don’t wait to protect your credit."
And then there is this article from Time that includes a link to the data breach checker on the NPD website.
"National Public Data" NPD is the company that was data breached.

Data breach checker
"National Public Data confirms massive data breach included Social Security numbers"
--- My data is absolutely on that NPD checker page. ---

Thanks for the links; I just checked and virtually every place I've lived (spread across five states) since June of 1988 shows up on the list; same thing for my wife (her data only goes back to about 1990).

None of mine are, which is not surprising. I've consistently opted out of data brokers and suppressed various ones. Removed myself from marketing lists.
Did the same for my spouse which was also not in the database.
I also typically avoid being tracked online through a series of ad blocking, script blocking, fingerprint poisonings, cookie non-persistence, VPNs, and Tor.
I also have no social media presence.
These data brokers work with HR departments to basically rat people out for what they do on Twitter and Facebook, so you get into an argument with some Internet jerk, they see that, they flag it. You like something that could be "risky" for the employer, it gets flagged.
Then you only find out about it if they don't give you a job and you request a consumer report within so many days.
These brokers are more like mixers. They take some info here, and some there. They tell people everything about you. They're scum.
There's a reason why Facebook has a real name policy. It makes it even easier to ensure that they're selling your personal data to be mixed into the right advertising and data broker files.

The Do Not Call registry is basically worthless. Scammers in India don't care about the FTC.
Nevertheless, you might as well add your numbers to the list.
