You'd have to write the Calif FTB and tell them that they are reporting incorrect information on you to the three credit bureaus, indicate that it is a violation of your civil rights per the FCRA and then you'll need to write to the three CRAs and tell them that the SOL has elapsed on the reporting of this tax lien, which only is able to be reported for 7 years again per the FCRA.

Be sure to send the letter to the FTB CMRRR, also send a letter to your County Recorder's Office bc they are the actual ones who send the info in to the CRAs.

Just make sure that you're current with California state taxes, because you stand a good chance of having them scrutinize you if you begin to ask the lien to be removed.

Re: 1998 state tax liens removal

a tax lien is reported 7 years from the date of payment.  Since this was an error and there was no tax due - then it is INACCURATE(should have been vacated not released)  Do you have any paperwork (other than the release) showing that is was inaccurate (okay, released w/o payment might due)?

To Whom It May Concern:

I recently pulled my credit report from Experian, Equifax and TransUnion and noticed this account was listed on each of my reports as a public record. I immediately disputed this information with Experian, Equifax and TransUnion and the results of the investigation came back as "verified

Since I have disputed the account with the credit bureaus, and you have verified them, I would like to see what sort of records you have for this alleged account. Under the new FACTA laws, you are required to conduct an investigation on this account, and I am now requesting it.

Since the lien was obtained by the CA-FTB in error removal from any and all credit reporting agencies within 30 days is the only course of ation acceptable to me; I also expect the CA_FTB to file a motion to vacate for this/these case(s) to permanently remove the item from my report(s).   My documentation in support of your error is enclosed.

If you don't respond with the removal from the credit reporting agencies, I will assume you are willfully in non-complaince of the FCRA  and negligent in providing the credit bureaus with accurate information.
