On July 26 2022, I received a notification that my AMEX BCP card was physically being used at Target while I was paying at the drive thru at McDonald's for my ice cream (machine was working lol). How could that be if I had handed my card to the cashier at McDonald's to pay she swiped it and gave the card back to me. I asked my niece to pull over and I immediatly contacted AMEX via chat and of course they are going to ask you about the card if you you still have it in my possession etc. I told the rep I still have my card with me. Earlier in the day I had used the card to buy lunch and gas. During that time I had the card and it never left my sight I told the rep. Rep told me that since the charge was still pending they could not really do much until it actually posted 2 days later. This time I called AMEX and spoke to rep when through some question and all and he had mentioned the transaction from McDonalds he says between Target and McDonald's it's 30 min apart in location from each other. I never physically went to that particular Target since its far from where I live there is another Targert that I frequent and its 5 min from my home. Fraud claim was submitted and 3 days later I get a notifactio that the claim was closed and the charges are valid because I have dealt with that merchant before. I called back again I told them yes I shop at Target but not at that particular location there is one much closer to my house.
What more frustrating is that not once did the reps via chat or phone suggested to close down the card and issue a new one. I froze the card as soon as the unauthorzied charge came through. The rep on the phone told me you can continue to use your card while we investigate. I went online closed the old card and had a new card reissued. It is going to be 2 weeks since I reopened the dispute and still pending I called this morning and they told me that the merchant has until August 16 2022 to resolve this. I am hoping that it will resolve soon.
May be a long shot. Call Target and explain the situation. Ask if their stores keep video/snapshots of transactions at the point of sale. And for how long. If so. Go by that Target and explain what happened. They may be able to pull up the time/register and a snapshot from the security cameras of the transaction. You and Target can see it wasnt you. Then get some type of documentation from Target and have the charges reversed. Then you'll have proof for AMEX. Get another card. Good Luck.
Just a hunch. Maybe AMEX sees Target. But no store number.

Good plan and I agree OP should do this, however Amex most DEFINITELY sees which store it was. EVERY transaction (including online ones) on my BCP has all the store details including store number and address info attached to it (online purchases show company's HQ address).

Good idea, but as FireMedic1 stated it may be a long shot. Most merchants will only release footage to a law enforcement agency as part of an investigation. The reason? They don't want to be held liable for what you may do with the information. To mitigate risk, they'll release the info to the agency and "wash their hands" of any thing that may happen after/if the agency releases it to you. So, don't be surprise if Target declines your request. Good Luck as I know this situation is frustrating.

I would also think that American Express could tell you if the card was swiped in a reader or used via Apple Pay and a phone or was manually entered in.
Technically it would be impossible for you to swipe the car to McDonald's while it was being swiped at Target...now if they used another means of processing the card, that will likely be a key piece of the dispute.
Thanks @OmarGB9
@CeewinI only said "Then get some type of documentation" Didnt mean the pic. No no no. Well aware of that. Like the hospital I work for PT. Only the patient gets their medical records. HIPPA. Even a over-heard reported conversation about a Patient is illegal. And both have to have direct care. Violation also.
Ex LEO converted to FM. Mom always said. A smart man makes money while they sleep. So I did!
Call police and file a report. Then make sure to send a copy to amex. It is ez to get a card number and encode it on a different card.

So, why not file a police report and let law enforcement obtain the tape? Assuming it hasn't been erased- they only keep them so long...
