After 7 years, what to do about a certain debt????

Question: Do I need to pay a $200 debt from 1996? Hi, Today I received a really really rude phone call from a collections company about a very very small debt I had in 1996. Total owed, $200. The last address they tried sending anything to was my address in 1996, and they did not make any attempt to contact me after that address. I had really forgotten about the tiny account, and would have paid it if they had contacted me.... My question... this is not on my credit report (I pulled all 3 when I bought a car a few months ago, just so I would know what was there, and my credit score is an average of 717). Given the rudeness of the person on the phone, I don't really want to pay them $200. What will happen if I don't? And am I right that it isn't affecting my credit? Thank you!!!!

Happy,
This is just the question I have wanted to ask. If one is getting a lot of activity (phone calls , letters) from a CA over a former account that is well beyond SOL ; is this the reason that it is not on the CR?
It seems that their only option after SOL is just to badger. Is this correct ?

Thanks to you and others for all the good work,
RP

Re: After 7 years, what to do about a certain debt????

OP

Th next time these guys call you let them know that they are not to contact you again.  Let them know that the debt is beyond the SOL and that if they cotinue to harrass you, you will contact the FTC. Keep an eye on your reports it is possible though illegal to reagea debt. Let them know that if the debt appears on your credit report because it is past the reporting limitations under FCRA you will file a complaint with the FTC.

If thy don't stop file a complaint at www.ftc.gov  under consumers
