Is there such a thing that exists?
I know credit card freezes are a thing but im looking for something that lets me know if a new credit line was granted or applied for with my SSN
Welcome @Anonymous
Everytime you enter your SS# and apply. You gave permission to use your SS#. Thats when you hit the doorbell. The CRA's use your so called license plate on your backside (SS#) to identify you. Grab a Credit Karma account. They give alerts on any movements on your credit file actually before many other credit monitoring services if your info is used and it isnt you by chance. Then its fraud time.
Most of your major credit cards come with credit monitoring that includes every inquiry for credit and if new credit lines are extended. some also have a credit monitoring that searches the dark web for any of your info that might be posted there (discover, chase, and capital one are a few I know that do) I myself was recently notified by all 3 that my SSN was on there recently after a hacker hacked t mobile back in august where they got 65 million individuals information the hacker is just now trying to sell the info so I immediately put a fraud alert on my credit by notifying Experian which notified the others.
If you keep all 3 credit reports locked, you will be notified if an in inquiry attempt was made and subsequently blocked by the credit reporting agency due to the credit lock. These alerts are nearly instantaneous so you'll know right away if anyone tried to open an account/access your reports. I assume the same happens for report freezes.
Locking/freezing your reports will help prevent most types of fraud (those that require a credit pull) from occurring in the first place -- you'll just have to remember to unlock your reports before completing an app - and to re-lock when done.
Alternatively, use of a credit monitoring site, like Credit Karma, will notify immediately once a new inquiry is made and/or a new account is opened - but then you'll need to take action to report and handle the fraud after the fact.
