I have an Amex charge off for 1300 on my credit report. Want to pay it off and get back in with Amex but need to know how it will be reported to the credit bureau. Amex keeps telling me it will show as paid in full but can’t answer if it will still show as charged off or just as a closed account.
Applying for a mortgage so I don’t want to have my score drop because I paid the balance. Does anyone know how this would show on the credit report?
It will remain on your CR as charged off account, but it will reflect $0.00 balance
That will also help with your utilization as CO accounts are 100% utilized.
If the account is currently updating, paying CO will stop the updates and it will allow your scores to start gradual recovery providing this is your last unpaid derog.
Opened: 4/12
Last Active: 7/15
Reported 12/15
Notes: Account closed by credit grantor 7/15: cancelled by credit grantor
Past Due: 1319
Payment: Profit & Loss
Balance: 1319
My concern is that paying it will get it to update last active to 9/19 and drop my score.

There is a score drop associated with update, but that's to be expected because account remained unpaid for extended period of time
You'll have to decide for yourself what's more important, a temporary score drop that and possibility of getting another account with Amex in the future, versus a score drop and maintaining status quo.
In any case, if you decide not to pay, your chances of getting in with Amex within next 10 years or so are slim to none. Also, keep in mind, every time you apply, lenders can see you have unpaid charge off and it's not a good look.
You can always opt to wait it out till it drops off which in your case is in about 3 years, just dont expect Amex approval any time soon in that case as they will retain it in internal records forever plus a few weeks
You should stay app free for at least a year prior to the mortgage application.
Your prospective lender will probably require you to pay it off anyway before mortgage is approved, so dont do anything till they instruct you on which steps you need to take.
I am already pre approved but i didnt get the best rate becuase of this charge off. Loan officer is saying if i can make it go away or make it report differntly, my score will go up thus a better rate.
I just checked the amex webiste and i can still log in and see my account details showing the past due balance. There is also the option to make a payment just as there was when the account was open. Any idea if this is a good idea or if it would still show as charge off/PIF?
Thanks for your help.
Charge off paid, unless you can convince Amex to remove their reporting
I really would not hold my breath and payment/dispute wont do it.
Best you can do is try writing GW letters and ask for removal.
Once a creditor has taken a charge-off, it can thereafter appear in your credit report in several ways.
Only one of those ways is removed by paying the debt, which is the current status that the account/debt remains delinquent.
After taking a CO, the creditor can report the static amount of the debt at time of charge-off. That reporting thereafter remains even if paid.
For any month where the debt remains delinquent after they have taken a CO, the creditor has the option of reporting the payment history profile delinquency status for those months as CO rather than the normal, for example, 150-late format.
That payment history profile remains as factual prior data, and is not removed after the debt is no longer delinquent (i.e., paid).
The current status, which represents only a snapshot of the status as of the date of any updated reporting, can continue to be reported as CO if the debt remains delinquent as was subjected to a prior charge-off.
However, after the debt is paid, the current status is no longer one of any dellnquency, and thus the current status will show a non-delinquency status, such as Paid, or Settled for Less.
Paying thus removes CO from reporting as current delinquency status, but does not remove the static reporting of the prior CO as either the amount at time of CO or as the prior monthlly delinquency status in your payment history profile.
