Apply for Credit Card before Auto Loan (Get Bonus)

Hello,

My credit is somwhat fairly new: Over a year.  My first CC is from BoA, then I got a Chase Freedom which allowed me to build my credit quite a bit and recently as in this past month, I got the Amex cash back.  My fico score is 725, TU: 756, EQ: 756.

My question is, I've been wanting to get the CSP for a while now and in addition to that, I also want a newer car.  So I've been thinking what if I apply for the CSP and then use the card for the down payment in order to meet the 4k in 4 months?  Is applying for yet another cc before an auto loan a very bad idea? Thanks!

Welcome to MyFico

Unless the new account dramatically affects your credit scores it won't hurt you ability to get an auto loan.  With the new 50K point offer from Chase for the CSP, it's a great time to apply for the card.

Re: Apply for Credit Card before Auto Loan (Get Bonus)

I've not played the auto loan game yet so can't speak directly to that. But...

Dealerships don't take too kindly to credit card purchases. Planning to put even the down payment on a credit card can affect negotiations.

Is the down payment going to be the same whether you use cash or a credit card/are you planning on paying in full? With car loan rates so crazy low I think it would be a bad idea to pay credit card interest on something that could get wrapped into an auto loan, regardless of the signing bonus value.

My credit union pre-approved me for a 2% car loan when I had 9 recent inquiries. Of course less inquiries is better but I honestly can't imagine one more hard hit would change much, especially if you get your auto loan before the account reports.

If you wait for the CSP to report before getting your loan, the drop in your average age of account would likely affect rates IMO.

One last thing: I love the CSP. It is a particular card though, and you need to have specific spending habbits to make it pay off. I'd suggest you make sure it's a card you want to have for a long time before you apply for it.

Cheers!

Lots of thoughtful observations here by EG5.  If you are going to use a credit card for part of an auto purchase, you will need to be able to negotiate the most aggressive price possible (without them knowing that you intend to use a CC) and you need to know that if you do pull it out afterward that they have let you use it.  If you can't be sure of both things in advance, you will likely end up paying for their swipe fee smuggled into a higher final negotiated price.  Finally if you won't be paying your balance in full on the new card, you should have done your homework to see how much the interest will cost you while you are paying it off.

And a very sound observation about the CSP.  Remember that the annual fee is substantial, so unless you are certain that you would be doing all that travel anyway even without the card, you may wish to think again.  Bear in mind that there are always going to be amazing signup offers for various cards.  Not even three months goes by without there being some apparently unprecedented awesome offer.  Your credit profile is new, so you will have decades and decades to take advantage of these.  When you are young, it is sometimes wisest to be looking to add cards that you can keep forever at no annual cost.

You may want to google (now and once a month) a search like best credit card signup offers no annual fee.  For example, a few months ago you could have added the Citi and Amex Hiltton no annual fee cards and received 135,000 points for doing that.  These kind of offers for no annual fee cards are not uncommon.

It can be.  It can also have little to no impact.  It's not just the new card -- it's one's credit profile that matters.  Given that you said this:

I'd suggest getting the auto loan finalized first so that the new credit card doesn't impact the rates you'd qualify for.  If you had a much older and thicker credit profile it might matter less.

Verify that the dealership you intend to use will allow that and how much they'll allow you to put down with a card.

If you are going to have trouble meeting the bonus spend requirement then you may want to carefully reconsider the CSP.  Generally the CSP needs a significant amount of spend (easily exceeding 4K in 4 months) for one to benefit.  Have you run the numbers for your spend?  Have you carefully researched the UR program so you know which redemption methods you can use?  They will have an impact on point value.  Make sure you're considering total cost/benefit and deducting the AF from the rewards you calculate on your spend.

Additionally, would you be carrying this down payment charged to a card?

Keep in mind that you don't have just one FICO score with each CRA.  There are many FICO models used by creditors and you need to consider the specific model as well as the CRA and the relevance of a given combo for a creditor/product.  I'm guessing the scores you've provided are FICO 8's.  If that's the case, keep in mind that auto lenders generally don't use FICO 8.  If you're only looking at FICO 8's and your auto lender uses a different FICO then you may be disappointed when they pull different numbers for you.  See also the Understanding FICO Scoring subforum and its stickies.

You sure got some big britches there boy, that's a LOT of if's and no guarantees.

You could get denied for the CSP and then not only will your score take a hit, but you then wont have it for the down purchase on the vehicle, i'd suggest getting a card that isn't so "high maintenace",something like the QS or the like that don't come with a crazy minimum spend for the bonus and dont have an AF.

OP, do you prequalify for the CSP?

I don't feel like it's a terribly difficult card to get... as a matter of fact, I got denied a Quicksilver just before applying (succesfully) for my Sapphire Preferred, so I don't know if this is the best advice either.

YMMV.
