I have been receiving phone calls which are on my answering machine that are obvious bill collectors. On one call I answered and told the lady that this bill she was speaking of had to be over 12 years old. On November 27, 2009 I received a letter from Portfolio Recovery Associates stating that they have concluded their investigation and is closing my account.
Now tonight I get a form letter from Alliance One regarding another old debt. I am thinking this one also is over 10 years because about that time I was working on repairing my credit and since have had a good credit history.
The letter from Alliance One states that I have 30 days to either pay or dispute it looks like the same amount as the one from Portfolio within a few hundred but I am not sure these are one in the same. I do not know what the time limits are in Texas or how to find them or what exactly they are called.
However they are saying I must either make payment (which I am not going to do) or write them and tell them why I feel the bill is not valid.
Can someone tell me how to handle? Or how you would handle in this situation?
Never ever talk to a CA. If they call again, ignore it.
Send a DV to Alliance One. Make sure you send it within 30 days of their dunning letter.
CAs can collect forever on unpaid debts. It's not uncommon for them to sell the debt over and over and over long after CRTP and SOL expire.
