CA changed amount owed on CRA

I have an open collection account with Asset Acceptance that I am trying to do a PIF / PFD with. I tried it by email with an address from this site, no luck. I sent a PIF / PFD letter in mail yesterday.
This account was originally owned by AT&T but was sold to Asset. I called the OC first to make sure.

The credit limit/original amount is listed as $267. The credit report I pulled on Feb 15 says recent balance $281 as of 2/08. Status: Collection account. $281 past due as of Feb 2008.  Now it is reporting as recent balance  $282 as of 2/08. Collection account. $282 past due as of 2/2008

I realize it is only a dollar and that the CA's can & will tack on charges to the debt. My question is can they change what they have already reported? they did not add balance as of 3/08 $282.00, they changed what was already there for 2/08. There is no mention of the $281 at all so it leaves the impression that this was the amount they originally reported. This landed on my credit report in September. Have they been adding a dollar every month this way?

Under account staus is just says Collection account as of 9/07, 10/07, 11/07, 12/07, 1/08, 2/08

Also does anyone have any specific advice on how to deal wth this CA? I have read that they are not easy to deal with.

Re: CA changed amount owed on CRA

I answered part of my own question...

For the above post I was looking at my Experian report. i checked Equifax and it lists the amount as $280 as of 1/08. So yes they are adding a $1 a month and changing it rather than adding. Can they do that? on EQ it is also listed as past due. Also says Current Status: Collection account; type of account-open, type of of loan- factoring ccompany account. What does that mean and is it reporting correctly?

Thatnsk for any help you can offer.
